Reading though the AM codex, a lot of times it mentions being able to give somebody a "power weapon" and not any specific one. The kind of weapon (Axe, sword, lance, or maul) seems to be indicated by what the model is using, but is it a case of "This is what the model normally has, so that's the one he can get" or is it more of "Whatever you model your model to have is the weapon you get?" so that you theoretically could get infantry squads with power axe wielding sergeants running around.

GW writes rules so bad. All power weapons back in 5th ed allowed no armor saves so even terminators with sv2+ would get ganked.
Now A power weapon actually has stats
Sword swings at user ininiative and is ap3
Axe gets +1 Str and and ap2 but is un wiedly
Maul gets +1 Str and ap4 and concussive.

Except a maul is +2 strength, not +1. Automatically Appended Next Post: And power lance is S+1 AP3 on the charge, S as user AP4 the rest of the time.

You can choose your power weapon from the list of power weapons in the BRB. Look in the melee weapons section, there are three or four listed under the same entry. Note that power fist is a different item both in the codex and the BRB. So this specific case isn't bad GW ruling .

Nope, pretty sure you're thinking of the force staff. Has the same stats as a power maul, with the addition of the force rule of course. There is, however, no "power staff".

The pre-amble segment on page 179 explains that, in order to determine what 'type' of Power Weapon you have, you look at the model, and that " if it's a blunt weapon like a mace or staff, it's a power maul;". So you can have a power staff, but it uses the statline for a Power Maul (likewise, you can have a force mace).
