Howdy Gents!

So i've been out of the loop for a bit and my last consistent games were back in 6th edition and i've been into assorted ways i can improve my overall Guard Army. So first off, how much has changed performance wise in the Guard codex? What's Hot, What's not? Are there any opponents who present more of a threat now? And what angle should i aim for with my Guard. Previously, i had mix of Mechtastic Veterans in metal BAWKE's hiding behind a Defense line with an Infantry Platoon armed with Missile Launchers beside a pair of Leman Russ Vanquishers and a Vulture gunship with the ultimate dakka on it.

Just looking for Generic help at this point in time. Thanks ahead of time!

Mech vets, blobs behind aegis still works, though missile launcher seems like a bad idea. Also Vanquisher is an expensive hit or miss weapon, and isn't guaranteed to blow up a vehicle at all. Vanq + lascannon though may not be the worst idea ever. Try Pask in punisher with lascannon and multi melta (the one with gatling) and a second tank with plasma.

Try lascannon, maybe autocannon. Don't know the vulture, but Vendetta with 3TL Lascannon is nice anti-air and anti-tank.

Yes^2.

My Wyvern constantly performs well above its points cost. It can be a pain if you're not used to shooting it, and especially with multiple Wyverns in the same unit, but it's so much fun.

Yeah, from what I've seen the Wyverns are super good right now. They put out a lot of templates for their measly points cost.

Mech vets have been treating me well, rolling around in chimeras is still a winner.

And I would agree on the vanquisher being hit or miss. Even after they pop a piece of heavy armor (which they are still very good at), you're just sitting with a big 'ol anti-armor cannon that could be stuck targeting infantry.

So Wyverns are essentially an auto-include and Mech Veterans can still be effective. What do you guys think of Tank Variants that are good for Omni-Purpose roles? I've been teasing the idea of using an Up-gunned Exterminator.

executioners with the Aquila relic that gives PE on the command squad is really good, saving you from gets hot rolls and 1's to wound on everything. can threaten all sorts of infantry MC and light vehicles. or you can go the pask route to gain PE as well.

Exterminators are great, another solid choice is the Pask-isher (punisher w/ pask). Actually the exterminator could do well with Pask too, giving you re-rolls on your Gets Hot and Pask's special ability to overcharge the main plasma gun for a single large/blinding blast.

Good multi-role tank squad is always a Paskisher and have his swaud buddy be an exterminator w/ plasma sponsons. Those two dish out alot of variable damage, but also draw tons of fire.

You mean executioner?

Exterminator is the auto cannon one no?

Pask is always fun. nothing like rolling and rerolling 20 dice.

Actually Preferred Enemy doesn't work on Executioners as you roll to see if the cannons 'Get Hot' prior to even placing your template. AFAIK that doesn't fall under the 'to hit' section, if there is an FAQ changing this please let me know.

Kasrkin, PE grants rerolls. You can reroll your Gets Hot! dice if you have a reroll. It's 100% legit.

Pask is pretty epic winsauce...nothing like machinegunning a Knight in one round of shooting. Dare I say, a Paskstar (Pask & 2 Executioners) surrounded by an invisible fearless blob of 50 Conscripts gets my jollies off in the morning.

Spoiler:
Preferred Enemy:

Unit re-rolls failed to hit and to wound rolls of 1 against the enemy. Says nothing about re-rolling everything. Get's Hot is applies prior to the round being 'fired' unless there was a change that i missed and if so can you link me to it for future reference?

Correction, just rechecked my BRB

As far as a Pask Star, that's almost 700 points off the start. Good god that's horrifying.

Its if you have the ability to reroll. rerolling a 1 is an ability to reroll.

Anyone wants to restart the "Does PE gives you re-roll only on Gets hot or on scatter too?" debate?

For the pask star I would go all out and add in DA librarian with power field generator and give pask relic armor. Now you have 3 av14 tanks with a 4+ invul (from power field generator), 4+ deny the witch (psychic hood, relic armor) plus prescience or whatever powers you roll. Also the psyker is very hard to kill due to very limited LOS blocked by the russ' and if he does get hit somehow he has a 2+ look out sir to 10 naked guardsmen who also happen to be in the powerfield generator's 4+ invul range. It's powerful and most your army.

As for the op's op. Eldar, Tau and tyranid flyer formation are nasty. New admech martians sound mean too. I say stick to what you got first and see what you area has in terms of meta. Also just see what your area does for perferred enemy.

40k is as exciting as riding a pony, which doesn't sound very exciting.......

But the pony is 300 feet tall and covered in CHAINSAWS!

You don't necessarily have to run 2 Executioners. 1 at 1,500 with a Pask-Punisher is usually enough. 2 may be overkill.

At 1,500 I usually run 6 Russes - Pask Punisher and an Executioner with Multimelta sponsons, an Exterminator and a Eradicator with bolter sponsons, and 2 lone Demolishers.

You could always run the other Russes from the Armored Company list for Obsec Leman Russes.

My quick rundown

Ccs in a Chimera hiding in ruins or behind Agis

1-2 vets in ruins or Agis with lascanons (give them ignore cover order)

Vets in chimeras to push with meltas (works best in my area)

Scions can work, scion cs with 4 hot shot volley guns sitting with coatez around vital assets is really good pod defence I've found. 16 S4 ap3 shot possibly with ignores cover and prescience at any ds within 12"

Vultures are awsome, always field at least one

Wyverns are good for the points

Manticores can be good, s10 at range is always nice especially since thunderwolves and wraiths are common now (t5 2 wounds) on the fence with them but do ok

Russ - battle tank is the go to overall but it depends on your area. I use a couple of executioners some times as I play lots of marine players. Pask (hq) in a vanquisher always does ok for me and regularly takes out landraiders, punisher is fun in 2-3 with prescience on. Demo is ok, short range means it takes a lot of fire and often dies by turn 3. Eradicator is good vs eldar or tau and really cheap for a front as 14 tank.

Vendettas are good but now 170 pts so arguably a little to pricey but good anti air or tank

Avenger for looks to escort your vulture (look amazing together)
But weak as hell

Personally I hate blobs as they slow games down but still work ok, sometimes I annoy people by putting cypher with them (grants +2 cover from shrouded and hit and run) and a prime psyker ideally giving them all a 4++ or prescience depending on what's happening. Had some good times in fun games with that, not comp at all but amusing
