I play a DE + CWE army at local tournaments. Superheavies are popular, the blasted Imperial Knights in particular. One of my friends suggested a very nasty build to counter those:

• Archon (WWP)
• Raider
• Fire Dragons

The unit Deep Strikes where I want them to and fires from any point of the open-topped hull of the Raider. With proper positioning this means that I may pick one of two facings of an IK. Because of the way Ion Shields work there's no way for the shield to intercept the melta volley because I can just pick the unprotected facing.

The Archon may take Haywire Grenades (higher chance to glance than a Blaster, lol), the Raider may take NS for 3+ Jink (the unit may actually survive/draw far more fire to be taken down than otherwise). Fire Dragon Exarch with Fast Shot is an excellent upgrade, more effective than a slightly more expensive additional Fire Dragon. In this configuration the entire unit costs 300 pts. and inflicts 3,6 pens (against AV 12) at AP 1 + 1,1 glancing hit. One or two additional Fire Dragons further ensure that the SH's days are counted and the unit still costs slightly less than an IK.

What do you think about that? Anyone has already used that build? And, on another note, what snazzy name would you suggest for that build?

Ive run this combo for a few months now. And actually I include an autarch for the reserve manipulation and a fusion gun. Fire dragons get an exarxh and fast shot.

You are absolutely going to kill what you want. However after that they are as good as dead or are going to get tied up in hth.

Honestly, for me, it hasnt been worthwhile. Yeah there have been some highlight moments, but it's a 1 trick pony that dies easily enough.

I can include an Autarch and/or ADL with Comms Relay to make sure they come not only where I want them but also when I want them. Good point, though.

You're right, they're going to be top priority target immediately after doing their thing. However, I think that dealing with a SH in one turn is worth the sacrifice, and the firepower that's going to target them will be diverted away from the rest of my army.

Archon (WWP)

Serpents are very reliable these days.
You could transport the Fire Dragons by a Serpent as well.
I use generally two small FD units in Serpents to get the job(s) done.

What makes the Raider worthwhile is that I can DS it where I want it and shoot from within at the unprotected facing of an IK (the biggest SH offender at the tournaments). It's also worth noting that I play DE primary and I want it to stay this way

Why not just DSing 2 units of haywire scourges?

AI & BFG: / BMG: Mr. Freeze, Deathstroke / Battletech: SR, OWA / Fallout Factions: BoS / HGB: Caprice / Malifaux: Arcanists, Guild, Outcasts / MCP: Mutants / SAGA: Ordensstaat / SW Legion: CIS / WWX: Union

Put the Webway guy in the waveserpent with the fire dragons.
Deep Strike the Wave Serpent, disembark the fire dragons, and leave the Archon in the wave serpent (allowed as per page 80).

Place the fire dragons on the line between two facings, and now that they are free from the Archon, battle fate into the arc that doesn't have the shield.

IMO, you're better off with the serpent, you can get 2 more guys in it, and it's a lot more survivable than a raider.

Well, the idea was suggested by an SM player. The Imperials have a penchant for big, expensive units.

I probably just could use those 2 teams of Scourges instead. I equipped mine with Heat Lances but my opponents are unlikely to see the difference. Give them TL with a Farseer and watch the IK go away...

Curb stomping in the Eye of Terror!

What about using allied SpiritSeer + WraithGuard w/ cannons + DE HQ with WWP?

SpiritSeer, get that battlefocus power to give your guard move threat range.

Thoughts?

Tough unit, probably ds center table to dominate the center...

I've been playing with options, and so far I'm liking the Falcon and Firedragons, led by Archon with webway, blaster and armor of misery.
It lets me pin point land, disembark and take 7 S8 shots (6 melta + 1 lance) and then another 3 S8 shots (1 lance) at another target within 48".
That's a total of 10 S8 shots, all AP2 or better. It puts the hurt down.
I liked it with the serpent, but I'm liking it more with the Falcon. That 48" range lets me drop meltas point blank on one target while I shoot at the side/rear armor of another.

Meanwhile, the shuriken storm of 10 dire avengers deep striking in raiders brings in plenty of infantry killing power.
