I'm thinking about starting a 1k Dark Eldar list after having been drawn to a couple of units that I really like the looks of. I've only ever played Imperial armies though and am completely unfamiliar with their play style besides being described as a glass hammer. I hoping I could have some help putting together a viable list based around the 3 particular units I already want to take: a Haemonculus, Wracks and Warriors.
I like the looks of Venoms much more than Raiders, so I was thinking something along the lines of a big squad of Wracks with the Haemonculus attached with a webway portal and warriors in venoms with blasters. Maybe some Trueborn? I also wouldn't mind taking a Talos, Cronus, Grotesque, Wytches, Succubus or two.

Dark Eldar live or die on the strength of their transports. If you prefer Venoms aim for a MSU force, stick Elites units in the Venoms and you can make each one a serious threat that has to be dealt with immediately.

How would I go about making them such threats then?

There is a thread for DE tactics further down this page. Just scan through there, and you will find some great info.
The trueborn with 4 blasters riding a venom is a common DE build. As stated above, Transports are very important for DE. Look as some of the tactics Mushykilla has, I think he is running a Grot list with Razorwing jet fighters that is very effective.

Mush's list (at least the one I know) is two large units of Grotesques each with a haemonculus with webway portal and some Talos for support

The BIG winners in the Dark Eldar codex are Grotesques for sure. Can't say enough good things about them. Put an Agonizer on the Abberation and Liquifiers. the unit can multicharge like no ones business and loses little for doing so. The Grotesquerie is a Formation found in the Dark Eldar Haemonculus Coven supplement and I highly recommend using it. My blog has a lot to say on Dark Eldar as well if you'd care to browse it.
The Wracks are better in a Raider. it has more hull points and gives you more square inches to fire from inside.
Warriors are fine troops. I am usually not using them in my lists, but when you do, the Wracks to twin link their shots is of great value. They, like the Necron Arks make for a nice platform to safely fire your warriors from.
One other upgrade makes me like the Raiders better than venoms: Aethersails. They make Dark Eldar ridiculouly fast to their Maelstrom objectives but also allow you to bait and run from a unit you want to get out of position.
Raiders also mount an EXCELLENT anti-incfantry weapon, the Disintegrator Cannons. 5 of those will make nearly any unit cry and their range is fantastic. Poion has ZERO effect on vehicles but Disintegrators can, another bonus.
Good luck.

I would recommend checking out The Dark City if you plan on dabbling in Dark Eldar. The community is really helpful and there lots of good articles/threads for the burgeoning Archon. We have quite a few playstyles this edition described well in this article. It's a fun army to play with lots of variety and options, that being said it can be a challenge at times.
Hope that helps.
