The Great State of Texas

Jealous that Texas and NY got all the ad space from Ebola, Arizona decided to go old school with THE PLAGUE.
Sources say the State's Chamber of Commerce decided to heck with it, packed their bags and took the last train out.

Fleas test positive for plague near Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AP) -

Coconino County officials are taking precautions after finding fleas collected in Picture Canyon northeast of Flagstaff have tested positive for plague.

The Arizona Daily Sun reported Friday that the County Public Health Services District is conducting additional tests and disinfecting prairie dog burrows.

Public health officials collected the fleas around trails in the popular hiking area after noticing some prairie dogs dying off.

The positive test is the first sign of plague activity in the county since last September in Doney Park.

Officials are advising residents to take precautions such as using insect repellent and to avoid handling sick or dead animals.

Symptoms of plague appear within two to six days after initial exposure. They can include fever, chills, swollen lymph glands and muscle pain (and Frazzled notes; DEATH).

Yersinia pestis is a bacteria and, as far as I know, not resistant to antibiotics. Further, the hygiene of today's hospitals are a tad better, to say the least, than the conditions in Europe during the 1300s. Still, might as well keep observing it, just to be sure.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

That and you don't have the Mongol's throwing dead bodies infected with it into various places, so the spread isn't going to be as bad either.

Actually not all that surprising. Black Plague pops up in the american southwest from time to time. Prairie Dogs are known (if infrequent) carriers. Well, more accurately, they tend to have the fleas that are infested with plague.

Behind you

Usual sort of thing, most illnesses still linger on in present day. The black death is usually most prevelent in Africa, and still flares up now and again. Its hard actually eliminating a disease totally, we haven't done it since smallpox, and because of today's fiancial constraints, likely won't do it again.

And smallpox was unique in several ways that allowed eradication.

That is impressively bad, even orks will autohit with a flamer.

Bubonic Plague pops up in a lot of rural areas now and then. I don't think anyone's died from it in quite a long time though.

Yes, but it was due to other factors as well like the poor hygiene, sanitation and general living conditions that let it get so bad. For example, i doubt anyone is dumping their garbage/toilet waste out the window each morning, or allowing rats to infest their homes.

Actually they've done studies (I was edumacated more gooder via National Geographic) of casualty rates in Britain. They approached 60%.
Fleas started it but once started it was effectively room distance airborne, just like the flu.
