Every spring I go through and sort out my new unpainted acquisitions and put them away, sorted by faction and such into my (unpainted) model library It's one of my favorite annual rituals. Here's what I've accumulated since Spring 2014!! It was a good haul this year
This doesn't include the boxes that are painted (or at least significantly painted) -- about 250-ish models, I'd guess, since then. I toss the boxes of stuff that's desprued. It's also just strictly GW stuff (almost all 40k); it doesn't include PP or Infinity, though my Infinity collection is tiny in comparison.
Share your unpainted 40k/ FB collections!!!

Didn't someone say, "STEAL STEAL STEAL" as the beast discount?
No, I actually just bought a crap ton of the high value model box sets. Gave away 2 stormclaws and a space hulk as presents, too, plus most of the 7e mini rulebooks (to strangers at FLGS... All my friends already have rules). Really, though, those are cheap compared to other stuff. I mean, one storm raven is almost the price of a box with 30 minis.
If they come out with a tau vs SM or eldar box this year with anything remotely cool or useful, I will go seriously off the reservation.

You're not alone Over the years I've collected more models than I can possibly paint. The problem is, if you want it down the road it's either more expensive or OOP. Or the dreaded "web only", where you have to buy it direct, or wait forever for it to come through an FLGS.
On that topic, I learned something interesting about web-only. FLGS can order it from GW (with regular trade discounts), but only once a month they get free shipping. Otherwise, it's not worthwhile unless the order is large.
Until recently, I always ordered web-only directly from GW (some of the stores won't order it at all, discount it less, or sell at full MSRP). But, luckily, I found a nice shop that will work with me, as long as I'm not impatient to get web-only stuff.

@Talys, Oh yay. Price inflation is the exact reason why I'm considering buying an entire AdMech force in one go. Those Skitarii won't stay at 31€ for long @Rippy, lol, mine is more a case of chronic sloth. In the inordinate ammounts of time it takes me to finish painting even the smallest of squads, some other shiny new thing is likely to hit the stores. I tend to space out my buys, but something will catch my eye every now and then, and it will leave a sorry bunch of miniatures in various states of painting behind. 2014 has been my great year without purchases, though. I've just bought the updated ork dex, some supplements and IA:13, and without new minis to obsess about I've put all my efforts into finishing what I already had. And so, save for a trio of megameks that will likely be getting my attention tomorrow, my entire ork collection is finally all painted and ready to go.

@Angent_Tremolo - yeah, it's also the boxed "kits" -- not the web bundles, but the boxes that give you a 20% or so discount on the models; if you can get those at a further 25%+ -- you're in good shape.
Of course, that's just a nice rationalization, because I could get GW to rush courier every model I wanted to paint 2 days before I wanted to paint it, and ultimately pay less on the hobby. But then there would be so many fewer toy soldiers! hehe.
@Phyrekzhogos - Thank you

For me, 95% of the fun in the hobby is putting it together and painting it -- and 5% of the fun is in seeing new models and buying them... so commissioning it out would kinda defeat that
Besides... then what would I sneak off to do every night after wifey-poo goes to bed?

Thanks man! It took me 3 tries to get that color, though I'm actually still trying to learn more about yellow. I started with a reddish brown undercoat that I really want to show through still in the shadow areas, but so far, I still end up glopping right over it too much. I may try drybrushing the shadow areas down some (at least that's the plan right now). Alot of the yellow seems to come out pretty rough too even when I thin down the layers a ton. Not real sure if that's my GW paint reacting poorly to the Army Painter base spray I'm using or what though.
I'm practicing on really old metal mini's til I get my exact color scheme down pat. I'm still collecting models for my army in any case though, and I may end up getting an airbrush. I think the vehicles I wanna do in particular will be very difficult for me to brush on yellow if I can't figure out why the paint is so roughly gloppy textured and I don't wanna mess up anything that large.
Any suggestions on basing man? I looked up a really neat one on here just awhile back using greenstuff to make a cracked earth desert look and was thinking about that as it reminded me strongly of the red glassed out blasted landscapes of Baal.

@Phyrekzhogos -- Yellow is a b*tch to paint nicely unless you have the patience of Job. The easiest thing, of course, is to prime white or yellow, because covering black with bright yellow blows. But basically, the trick is just to put on about 3 coats of super thin averland sunset, and then 3 coats of your chosen yellow (like Yriel), again, really thin. You can see it the little armor plate in the photo below, no brush strokes at all. Liquitex Flo-Aid as your thinner really makes life easier when painting white, bone, or yellow, in my experience. Mediums like Lahmian or Liqueitex Medium is not helpful, I find (because it's still thick, just more transparent). Yave you considered Martian Ironearth? It works just like Agrellan Earth (paint it on -- the thicker, the bigger the cracks) and the pics in WD look pretty convincing. Here's a bad picture that someone else took of a magazine -- http://www.ozdestro.com/uploads/1/3/0/1/13014732/3581643_orig.jpg I personally like the ground to be a little less sparse, so my new thing now is to make a "path", where there's basing on either side of the cracked earth. It's super easy to do (paint the cracked earth after everything else), and looks pretty convincing. I haven't used the Martian Ironearth yet, but you can see what I mean with the old Agrellan Earth: The WD has a neat pattern too, where they gob it on thicker towards the center of the base, like spokes from bike wheels, so the center has big cracks and the edges has little cracks. Looks way cool. About that airbrush. You can get a really nice, even yellow, but the trick with an airbrush, again, is to either prime light, or to do a bazillion *thin* coats. Yellow covers black just so badly that you need to spray it over and over and over, and if you put it on too thick, it just pools in the details, and you get a globby mess. Personally, I prefer to paint it on with a brush, than airbrush, unless it's ALL yellow, tbh. These yellow stripes were all painted using a regular brush -- it was like, 10+ coats (2-3 Averland Sunset, and then Yriel or Flash Gitz over and over til it was solid) -- it's totally brushstroke free even if you stick your nose right to it. I got the crisp line just by using plain old masking tape.

Yeah, I really like that cracked earth effect there. I may give that a shot, I've just never really based my mini's before, so that'll be a learning experience.
In regards to the yellow, I read some guides that also mentioned using Averland. Sadly it's one of the colors I don't have yet, but I'm definitely going to pick some up tomorrow and see how that works. The orangey yellow color I'd ideally like to hit is much closer to this:
https://goldfishofjustice.wordpress.com/2014/04/08/lamenters-space-marines-commission/
I'm not actually sure I can base it like that without an airbrush, but the yellow I've hit so far is also definitely acceptable. I just definitely wanna try and get some small amount more red in shadowed areas I think.
btw, I use Vallejo thinner medium right now. Is the stuff from Liquitex better? I have noticed alot of times my thinner doesn't seem to make the drying time slow down much, and with the overall amount of layers I've been using, I definitely get some clumpiness. If Liquitex works better, I'll definitely pick some up. I already use a few of their sprays, and I love them mostly.
Thanks for all the suggestions man, I really appreciate it. I'm always learning a ton

Which Vallejo thinner or medium are you using? The Airbrush one? I am a big fan of Flo-Aid because you dilute it 20:1 (with water), and as a result, you get a medium that doesn't add volume. With most of the thinners and mediums, including Airbrush mediums, there IS volume added. Just squirt a dot on a palette, let it dry, and you'll see it's thick. With Flo-Aid, it dries to razor thin (since most of it just evaporates). But, unlike water, it doesn't cause your paint break apart and form drying spots. As a bonus, 20:1 dilution means 1 bottle lasts for... years. Flo-Aid lengthens the drying time *slightly*. Not long enough to be meaningful if you want to wet blend (ie if you weren't quick enough with water, you still won't be quick enough), nor is it long enough to paint letters with a teenie tiny brush. For that, I suggest Lahmian medium or a drying retarder. What Flo-Aid does exceedingly well is thin your paint and help it dry brushstroke-free. And being nearly as cheap as water doesn't hurt either. The closest color in the GW range to what you see in that photo would be Averland Sunset (with no layers) and then some of the edges highlighted with Yriel. It looks like they took a dark wash, maybe Nuhln or Agrax and washed just the recesses. To paint marines like that quickly, if you didn't have an airbrush, I would definitely cheat and use a yellow AP primer. I mean, 85% of that marine is yellow

Hrmmm, mine just says 100% Acrylic Resin Thinner Medium 73.524. It's a little white vallejo bottle, but I'm not really sure if it's technically made for their airbrush line or not. It works okay, but some of my GW paints are pretty chunky to begin with, so I end up using more than I may be supposed to.
I really will have to pick up that Averland. What I tried out was AP Spray Leather Brown as a base, followed up with a Liquitex yellow spray for my first layer, but the liquitex actually bubbled up some on the brown coat, so I figured it wasn't reacting well together and moved onto using a 50/50 mix of GW Skrag Brown and Yriel Yellow. Then I laid on regular yriel yellow thinned over that, and went about highlighting with Flash Gits. I used the XV-88 base for shadow details, then glazed back over the whole thing with Lamenters yellow glaze, but I'm not really sure that did anything noticeable. Final highlights were Ushabti Bone and that was pretty much it. I figured maybe I was using too many overall layers or not thinning them well enough though, and thats why I was seeing clumpy brush marks.
Tomorrow I'm probably gonna be down at my FLGS and I'm probably going to pick up some of the AP yellow primer as well as the Averland and then I'll give your method a shot and see how close I can get. Do you think the Agrax wash makes more sense than Serphim Sepia? I actually tested a Carroburg Crimson wash as well just to see how the red tint looked, but it was honestly too much. Haven't tried the Agrax yet.
Thanks again man

Phyrekzhogos, it's actually pretty hard to over-thin a paint with a medium. The two most common mistakes are:
1. You think you have overthinned it, because the first layer looks like crap. The thing is, if you've thinned it enough, painting yellow on top of black will look splotchy and like crap It will take at least 3 layers before it looks recognizable, probably close to 5 before it's solid (on top of black); and maybe 7+ before it's beautiful and vibrant.
2. After thinning a paint, you have too much paint on your brush. Once you use a brush to mix up paint, it will be oversaturated, dripping with wet paint. Resist the urge to use it and "save some paint". Rinse your brush, wipe it down, and then use just as much paint as you need.
Also, I'm a big fan of flat brushes when it comes to basecoat.
I think 73.524 is thinner for brush-on paint. I haven't used it before, sorry :(

I only have about 7-8 models and most of those are just tactical Squads. Just aquired a Furioso Dread and a box of Termies Im making into Blood Angels and thats got me broke this month already after bills. LOL. Being broke and having a hobby such as this sucks sometimes when you get the "WANTS" lmao
PS If any of that spring cleaning is for the trash bin (Say a Space Hulk Box Set or anything else for that matter) Ill gladly accept it! One mans junk is anothers treasure and all. LMAO
