Hello 40k generals! New to the forum, I'm posting this on behalf of my son who's starting an ork army as his first in 40k to learn the game. We're working with a ton of models provided to us from friends and a local club. Please refer to my intro post if interested! http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/644219.page#7745295

We've built some things like the Trukk and Heads+Torsos+legs+bases, but stuck at the arms now. My son loves to paint them, but too confused about which weapons would be best. From what I've been reading I would like to throw out the follow suggestion to see if you all think we're heading in the right direction.

We just don't want to simply glue a bunch of arms on that might end up really hurting his chances to have fun with it so it's not too late to switch everything around. (Maybe I'm over thinking this too, so if I am please say I'm being an over zealous dad! LOL!). Here it goes:

HQ
1x Grukk Face-Rippa: Straight from the box, nothing to mod here
1x Painboy: Also straight from the box, nothing to mod

Elites:
1x Boss Nob: suggesting to build him w/ Power Klaw, Kombi-weapon w/Rokkit Launcha, Boss Pole
5x Nobz: thinking Choppas and Kombi-weapons w/Rokkit Launchas on all??

Troops (note this is where the bulk of donations have come from so don't judge us harshly. We're so appreciative for all the kindness our 40k community has shown us!)

10x Boyz: thinking w/ Shootas and Choppas - led by Boss Nob with possibly Power Klaw, Shoota, Bosspole
10x Boyz: thinking w/ Shootas and Choppas - led by Boss Nob with possibly Power Klaw, Shoota, Bosspole
10x Boyz: thinking w/ Shootas and Choppas - led by Boss Nob with possibly Power Klaw, Shoota, Bosspole

Trukk with possibly a Ram, Rokkit Launcha, Boarding Plank, Extra Armour. Inside he could have:
10x Boyz w/ Shootas and Choppas?
1x Boy w/Big Shoota and Choppa?
1x Boss Nob with Power Klaw, Trin-linked Shoota, Bosspole?

15x Gretchen - led by Runtherd w/ Grot-Prod, Slugga, Squig Hound?
15x Gretchen - led by Runtherd w/ Grabba stik, Slugga, whip?
15x Gretchen - led by Runtherd w/ Grabba stik, Slugga, Squig Hound?

Heavy Support Here's where I think we need the most help
3x Killa Kans: Big shoota+kan klaw / Buzz Saw+Grotzooka / Buzz Saw+Rokkit Launcha
3x Killa Kans: Kan Klaw+Rokkit Launcha / Buzz Saw+Grotzooka / Buzz Saw+Skorcha

Thanks again for any help!

Nobz are great for two things, hiding characters and PKs, Ork shooting is terrible, hits on 5s, so having Kombi Rokkitz is throwing points away because they will only hit 1 out of 3 times with their 1 use rokkitz, if you really want combi weapons I would go with Kombi Skorcha because your guaranteed hits. However, With Nobz I would have 1 PK nob (NOT your boss nob) and the rest with Eavy Armor and nothing else. Keep them cheap and expendable.

I am personally a huge fan of Slugga/Choppa orks because I like having my orks with the extra attack, but this is more of a preference then a requirement. your boyz will always need a Nob with a BP/PK otherwise they are useless. For your kans I can't really offer help, I dont use them and I dont know if I will ever field them. However If you need good Heavy Support you can always go on Ebay and get a good deal on Lootas and maybe a Battle Wagon or two to provide that S7 AP2 Big Blast (KILL KANNON) Anyway, tell your son welcome to the Green Tide and WAAAAGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I'm pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you mess with me, I'll kill you all

Don't know if my 2 cents is coming too late, but I also prefer sluggas. That one extra attack per ork makes an overwhelming number of dice rolls even more overwhelming. There aren't many units that can survive getting swarmed by 20-30 orks at a time. Problem is getting enough orks into the fight.! Just remember with orks... the army's strength is numbers and overwhelming your opponent! I run at least 3 sets of 30 boys in every list I use.

Welcome to the WAAAAGH! What has already been said about Nob squads is true, keep them cheap with a PK and a bosspole with eavy armour. Don't put the PK on the Boss Nob or else he can get isolated in a challenge and killed before striking. As far as shootas vs sluggas, it's mostly personal preference however one thing has stood out to me over many games. If the boyz have a ride, keep them with sluggas because they can get into combat quickly, however that's not to say shootas aren't great in trukks. Footslogging orks should almost always be given a shoota. That will give them decent shooting, amazing overwatch and the ability to hold an objective well. For Killa Kanz, I always recommend grotzookas. 6 S6 small blasts can be devastating to any infantry in the game. You might not have much anti armour if you go this route, but that's pretty typical for orks at this point level if you don't have lootas. Well that's my advice, go have some fun! I wouldn't over think the whole preparation of the army etc. You will undoubtedly gain a new perspective on the army as a whole after just a few games and want to experiment with new things anyways.

A thing to keep in mind- you never want to field one Trukk by itself, it's a huge fire magnet. Either you will want to grab another Trukk or two, or go ahead and remove it.

Keep in mind that you cannot take Shootas and Choppas- only Sluggas and Choppas or Shootas.

The Boss Nobs you want to give powerklaws as opposed to shootas, although that's a fair option. They attack last, sure, but it's a fair price to pay for S10 AP2 attacks on the charge. Bosspoles are a great idea.

I'm personally not a fan of Nobs doing anything but acting as meatshields for the Warboss, so I think you might be better off giving at least two of them Power Klaws, sticking Grukk with them in a Trukk and going to town. Give them a Waagh! Banner if you can- WS5 is extremely useful against things like Khorne armies, which I am finding more and more common, especially with the new Daemonkin codex out.

Keep in mind that the Boss Nob and heavy weapon options are upgrades, not additional bodies. You replace one of your basic Boys with it, not add another in.

The grots are a good idea for fire cover, but I think that you only need two squads as opposed to three, as it gives you a few more points to throw around.

Now, for Heavy Supports... I'd take one squad of 3 grotzooka armed Kans. I've had a rather painful experience against them where they managed to get 120 hits against me in one round of shooting. It was painful. Perhaps from there, if you can't, then I'd give the odd machine out either the big shoota or a rokkit launcha. Also, two units for you to consider- Lootas and Big Gunz. Lootas are, point for point, some of the best S7 shooting in the entire game- after factoring in the BS2 that is Orky aiming skills! They're good for providing cover and bzzap anything that might disrupt your boyz from advancing. Big Gunz are really good in 1000-1250 points list, because they are cheap, they have great options, and they can have a whole bunch of T7 grot crew.

That's just my $.02, though.

Not too familiar with Orks, but can you take the Green Tide at 1000? That many Boyz leaves room for expansion by adding cool HQs from other Detachments (like Mad Dok, etc.) and is pretty straight forward to use... move mob, shoot, assault, laugh! haha

Not sure if Dakka Jets are any good still, but fliers are fun to use as well.. supplementing with a few of those at higher point games would be nice as well!

With the new codex charging a point to go from a slugga to a shoota, keep the slugga. Your orks should be getting stuck into combat right up against the enemy, not forming a firing line.

Killa Kans are the only models that have a decent chance of hitting with their attacks. Three of them armed with rokkits are going to score one or two hits every turn, making them decent anti-armour.

It has been said before, but for some decent shooting, consider lootas as your next purchase.

We don't use dollars, but that was my ¥0.12

The others have all given you lots of good advice on the hq and troops. The grots 3 units is a lot of them. Don't go for the grot prod it never does anything good. Grots themselves serve two functions grab objectives and catch bullets meant for the rest of the army. So grab stikk and squig hound is all that is needed. Once in a blue moon they will do something great like kill the last three orks on an objective winning me the game but generally they just sit on objectives and die.

Killa kans arm three all the same so I would go with three that were all rokkits and three that were all grotzookas. Rokkits hit the hard stuff and the zookas go for the troops.

May I suggest that you don't mix shooting weapons on Killa Kans, I like to go for three rokkits (anti-tank) or three Grotzookas (anti-infantry).

Just saying.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

Hi everyone wanted to report back after tonight's first 40k match. My son got to set up and we played with 750 of the 1500 army we have amassed. 2 models fell apart (he's learning what happens when you don't use enough glue LOL) and the boarding planks fell off the trukk (I'll have to pin those this weekend LOL)!
But we went up against a harlequin army for fun and the highlight was when Grukk charged at the HQ and tore him up with gutrippa! My son went bonkers and yelled waaagh! A few times throughout the night. He had a lot of good rolls on the dice and he also kept saying "I guess the luck of the dice are with me tonight" which from a little kid sounds hilarious. He was definitely in character and had a great time.
Now time to set up a 4x4 here at home and paint the rest of this army. Thanks to everyone for helping us out!

Oh the memories I remember when I started Orks... my stompa (on loan because I was just starting) ripped apart the biggest Eldar titan i'd ever seen at that point, My painboy skanked Logan Grimnar to death. and my last trukk as a "why not" rammed my opponents death company squad, he attempted a death or glory on his librarian with a single wound left... and failed my trukk ran him over and forced the squad to run away it was hilarious!

If you don't enjoy playing against people with unpainted armies, break into their house when they sleep, paint their figures for them, help yourself to their cheerios and then your problems will be solved.
Well, my opponents usually don't have more than 1-2 Wave Serpents 'cos Serpent spam is very expensive in real life money.

Wow! The only time I ever tried a Stompa, it rolled a pile of ones, killing one terminator. My opponent rolled a pile of sixes and it exploded onto my own boys, tabling me in one turn.

Still waiting for Godot.
