Hi everyone! In a continued attempt to make valkyrie guard happen out of the stock book, I took a look into assassins. My thought is that I can have vets in valks off the board turn 1 if there's a sneaky durable assassin lurking about the place.

Now, T4 3W isn't all that much to write home about. HOWEVER, the vindicare gets +1 cover, so if you've got 4+ somewhere, he's got a 2+ cover save (goes to ground). By the same token, the culexus gets WS/BS1 protection AND a 3+ cover if he goes to ground. Finally, with innfiltrate, I figured the sneaky assassins could deploy last and outrange everyone by setting up in nowheresville.

At most, he's got to take 2 rounds of shooting. Drop pods could be bad, but again, that's a lot of bolters to get through BS1 and a 3++ or a straight 2++. There may also be issues with ignores cover, but those tend to be rare-ish and most likely out-rangeable. You can also try and bank on 3w T4 with a 4(inv), and potentially BS 1.

Could bike armies pose a threat with a quick assault?

Could the Callidus hide in combat? My hesitation is that she's vulnerable T1.

Another option is to just convert up some wyvern gunships and sit them out of the way.

I think if you're counting on the assassin to be the sole model on the board on turn 1, I'd go with the Vindicare and keep him OUT OF SIGHT in a ruin for the 4+ invul and 3+ cover.

The Callidus is most worthy when you have other threats and don't mind infiltrating her up close for round 1 shooting (AP2 template) and round 2 assault.

The Culexus needs a transport to be most effective (IMO) and while BS1/WS1 against him is nice, mass shooting will take it down.

The Eversor, while awesome IF you can't get in combat against some weak blob, will most likely die before doing anything useful since he also needs to infiltrate close for a guaranteed turn 2 assault.

Remember that none of the assassins can go to ground since they are all fearless.

Best deployment options:

- infiltrate your Vindicare out of sight in a ruin and move into position for later shooting

-the only armies that can hurt him turn 1 are pod armies, Deathwing (rare sight), and Tau if you deploy within range of SMS (don't do that).

It's not tactically the most sound decision but, I like taking a Vindicare for those few occasions when someone brings a Bastion.

Target: "I have a Bastion."

Me: "No you don't."
