I don't know what the general thoughts are on this, but I have seen some movement trays for units that have special slots for each base, but they do not allow base to base formations. I was thinking about buying/making some trays that do the same thing for my unit of chaos knights. It seems almost impossible to build them freely without worrying how they will fit together on a movement tray as their weapon arms and shields make contact with the model to their left and right. What are your thoughts on this? I'm not trying to make my unit bigger or take advantage of anything, I just want my models to look good without being a jumbled mess.

It won't give you much of an advantage, if anything a bigger footprint will make them harder to manoeuvre, and will potentially have more hits landing on them in combat. I do share your difficulty with ranking up though, leadbelchers and witchelf horde do my head in when I'm setting up.

I just hate having to model my units so they rank up nicely. I don't mind my warriors, they seem to be fine but the Knights are my problem. They have so much potential for poses but are restricted by the fact they have to be base to base in a formation.

it wont matter soon anyway but as long as you don't change the size of the footprint that the unit SHOULD be then I'd be fine with it.
it might make things like templates a little harder though.

That's what I'm afraid of causing if I space my models out on the tray and they are more spread out to negate the effects of template weapons.

A big reason for spaced bases is either A.) Display boards and not in game or B.) Skirmishing units.

Otherwise you're changing the unit footprint and I'd have to say no.

Instead of spreading them sideways, stagger figures back a little, imagine the two corner figures to represent the front line of the whole unit.
Quite easy on a movement tray, especially if you build it slightly too deep...

Or build the figures in such a way that they interlock if deployed in order.

Yeah, you can get some pose variety if you build them like a jigsaw puzzle. They'll only rank up in a certain order though, like Knight 1 can only be next to Knight 3, Knight 3 can only be next to Knight 1 and 5, and so on.

I had a unit of 40 kitbashed Chosen. Each had a number and a letter on the bottom of his base corresponding to the row and column he needed to be in to rank up.
