CHICAGO (AP) — Prosecutors say an Uber driver with a concealed carry permit shot a 22-year-old man who opened fire on a group of pedestrians in Chicago.

Court records say the man shot at people walking in front of the driver’s vehicle Friday night in the Logan Square neighborhood. The driver then grabbed his own weapon and fired six rounds at the man, striking him multiple times. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn says the driver, who has a firearm owner’s identification card, acted in self-defense and the defense of others.

The man was ordered held without bail Sunday. He’s facing charges of aggravated battery with a firearm and illegal possession of a firearm.

Police say the driver hasn’t been charged.

Interesting to me because it's one of the few shootings by someone with Concealed Carry Permit since Illinois was forced to allow Concealed Carry a year or so ago. It's sort of the exception which is mildly surprising after all the talk that happened before it was adoptied. Pro Gun owner groups haven't gotten the major drop in crime or great number of similar incidents and gun-control groups haven't gotten the wild west situations that many of them seemed to be predicting.

One year is probably to short a time to know, but I'm very interested to see what things look like after a few more years of Concealed Carry in Illinois.

funny how the shooter has the guns *ILLEGALLY* already, showing that laws just dont seem to stop criminals.

also funny how this incident, along with others where someone saves people with guns, absolutely cannot be used as evidence that people actually are protected by guns.

OP might want to reword it, it seems like you are saying the bad shooter was a CCW permit holder, where as the only one with CCW was the one taking down the criminal with illegal guns firing into the crowd.

Clarifiied the title, I didn't mean to say the Driver was the bad guy. I'm intrigued by this story, both because it is a pretty clear example of Concealed Carry Permit holder saving the day, but also, because it's one of the few situations that seems to have come up recently despite a HUGE number (nearing 100,000) of CCL permit's that have been granted.

It's not that surprising. Every time a state has passed shall-issue concealed carry, or relaxed laws or regulations regarding concealed carry, the anti-gun crowd has screamed about how it's going to turn the state into the wild west, and every time they've been wrong.

True, but in some areas studies have also shown that CC doesn't decrease crime either. Just playing devil's advocate here...

Chicago is such a dynamic environment that it will be interesting to see what the results are 5 years out.

Oh, I'm not saying it definitively decreases crime everywhere. But it pretty definitively doesn't meaningfully increase crime, and at the very least doesn't turn places into the "wild west" imagined by the anti-gun crowd. Even if it doesn't decrease crime, if it doesn't meaningfully increase it there is no reason whatsoever why it should not be allowed for law-abiding citizens.

Is that a special option on the Uber app?

Sweet Wiener, that sounds like a good idea actually. Being able to order bodyguards via Uber along with a car.

it wont decrease crime, it just affects how much it can affect people.

For instance, in the OP article, a crime was *still* committed.

So even though a CCW holder stopped the shooter before worse things could happen, it wont affect crime stats.

What things like this do are mitigate the effects of criminal activity.

IE reduce the impact criminals can have,as even if you stop a robbery/murder/ect , attempting crimes is itself a crime, so its still +1 on the stat.

Well done for the CCW holder to intervene and save lives.
