I am planning on using raptors in my daemonkin army as alpha strike/draw attention away units. My problem is I can't decide if I want 2 squads of melta, or go more versatile and do one of melta one of plasma. What do you guys?

I'd argue Melta. That's what I am using at least. Deep Striking Metlacide units have good potential to do damage on a level that a squad of Plasma Raptors can't match in a single turn. Added in that they can't kill themselves shooting is great.

I just find that Melta fills in the gaps in the army better than plasma does. Axes of Khorne and Monstrous Creatures can take care of the 2+ armored units, and so the presence of Plasma isn't helping as much as Melta. Plus, massed Plasma is in my opinion is the only way to effectively run Plasma.

i was thinking terminators with combi meltas for the same job but i just dont like the unriliability of deep strike.

Meltas. You can follow up with an assault if needed after blasting something with them. It's extremely easy to get the raptors into melta range, so take advantage of it. The mark on your raptors can also affect their usage.

So with Meltas how are you playing/using the raptors?

I am thinking of putting som raptors into my CSM allies for my orks, to help fillout the tankbusting duty (so that the orks can charge the content turn 2 - as I run into issues where I get across the table, but still need to pop vehicles turn 2, thus leaving me open for fire).

So do you DS them into melta range? or Do you move them up the board? I was thinking if moving them up the board plasma would be better with its range? but then you can't charge after firing plasma.

Favourite Game: When your Warboss on bike wrecks 3 vehicles simply by HoW - especially when his bike is a custom monowheel.

Meltas over plasmas. every time.

They take down tanks and assist on MCs/HQs. plasmas take down MCs/HQs, but do not assist against tanks.

Simple decision of versatility. meltas are more often doing SOMETHING, even if plasmas will often do more.
And meltas don't blow up, and that's nice.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Melta over Plasma unless on bikes

On bikes, relentless helps in that you can charge after firing. No one wants to whiff against a tank and then not be able to finish it off with Krak grenades
