Hey, Dakka. I've been getting my girlfriend into 40k lately and she's decided she wants to do a Khorne CSM army. I don't have all the Chaos left from the Dark Vengeance box, but with the addition of a 5pack of Cultists I was able to barely scrape together 500 points.

Chaos Lord: power weapon; plasma pistol; sigil of corruption; Mark of Khorne 130
11 Chaos Cultists: 9× autogun; heavy stubber; Mark of Nurgle; + 1 Cultist Champion (shotgun) 98
11 Chaos Cultists: flamer; Mark of Nurgle; + 1 Cultist Champion 87
4 Chosen: power fist; pair of lightning claws; Mark of Khorne; + 1 Chosen Champion (boltgun; power weapon; gift of mutation; melta bombs) 185
500 points

I also have a spare Rhino that I'm probably going to give to her for this list, as a tiny footslogging melee squad trying to walk across the map behind a swarm of cultist meat shields isn't going to be too terribly effective. I also know full well that I crammed a bunch of potentially needless upgrades into this list to fill points, as I'm a longtime Guard and DA player and haven't really looked into the Chaos metagame since the Lash Prince days. Having just come into some money and having little experience with Chaos, what will make a good next addition to this list? I'm wanting to get her some Berserkers because she really likes them, but this list just seems so squishy compared to what DA and Guard bring to the table at 500pts. I'm budgeting roughly $60-$70USD for this round of upgrades. She's really into the fluff, so I want the list to be narrative and heavily Khorne themed, but I also want it to be viable enough that she actually enjoys playing.

Well at 500 points, a good list with Khorne is tough. I run a 500 point list with a decked out Juggernaut Lord with some Chaos Spawn for bodyguards/support. From there the list is filled with two naked squads of cultists and an obliterator.

I have seen some people running Kharn with cultist at 500 points with some reasonable success, possibly that is a route to examine for her?

That could be fun! In terms of larger point values, though, how would you spend the money? Is the list likely to be viable with Berserkers, or should we be investing in a Chaos tac squad?

This.

Dont underestimate how much face a Juggerlord of Khorne can wreck at 500 points.

He'll be upon the enemy on turn 2, and at 500 points you just dont have enough firepower to bring him down in 1 turn of shooting, especially if he has a bodyguard.

Plus the Juggerlord model is arguably one of the most badass looking CSM sculpts out there, so your girlfriend will love it.

GW is scared of girls. Why do you think they have so much trouble sculpting attractive female models? Because girls have cooties and the staff at GW don't like looking at them for too long because it makes them feel funny in their naughty place.

Don't know if you got the Helbrute with the DV stuff, but they should be cheap. You could do Lord (or Jugger/Kharn) x2 Cultist and x2 Helbrute for right around or even under 500pts.

I do highly suggest the Juggerloard or Kharn as they are easy to ram into somebody and provide satisfaction for newer players.

A lot of new players can be put off if they frequently loose. If you want to be cheesey: Juggerloard, x2 Cultist, Heldrake

I have to agree with Apex, starting with the basics and just adding a Juggerlord/Kharn would make for a great starter army. My experience is limited when it comes to Hellbrutes, don't they wander the field aimlessly unless they are in a formation or something? (Sorry for my ignorance, I only really stick to CSM troops/Oblits).

Thanks, guys. I'll try to dig up a single Juggernaut on eBay and kitbash it together with some Marine Biker bits I have.
