I'll begin by saying that I'm not talking any specific army, this can apply to anything in the game.

Has anything ever happened to your army that made you want to or actually had you get rid of it?

The stories I know of people quitting armies are a black templar player being shuffled into marines, an ork player saying he got nerfed too hard (not sure which codex he was talking about), and now an eldar player shelfing half his army because he feels bad using wraiths.

EDIT: changed to multiple answers

Easy: this game. the power creep and cost creep was just too much and I traded or sold off all of my 40k stuff.

The final straw was playing Blood Angels (5th ed codex) in a 6th ed tourney against serpent spam, daemons and white scars bikes. after that, the Angels went on the block and I moved on to other games.

I don't think I'll ever come back although I did somehow end up with a box of Dark Eldar Wyches

I moved away from Eldar because I got bored of them, and even now I'll just make a single list of them usable before they go back on the shelf as my loaner army. Let's my friends play a good army for a change instead of the crap they normally bring.

Tyranids I put away because the lists were way too mono-build. Not enough originality left in them. That's been slightly fixed but I still only have one usable list from them. They just don't translate to the tabletop like they used to. I expect Genestealer Cults will fix that.

If Marines lose Chapter Tactics then I won't be able to run my Astral Claws anymore. I would definitely shelve them until IA-9 the 2nd comes out.

I'd be down to Ultramarines, Blood Angels and Chaos at that point as the armies I actively build to be better.

Where's the option for

"I don't sell any models. If for some reason I don't want to play one particular army I switch to another army I own."

Not everyone has a kneejerk ebay moment every time the new hotness is released.

I didn't word it properly, but part of what I meant by "get rid of" was "put on a shelf for a very long time" or "hide away in the lost archives of my basement".

a) new codex which removes units from a list and makes it unplayable (e.g. sororitas)

b) new line of miniatures, which makes the old lineup feel incompatible or inferiour. I sold my metal Kasrkin, when the tempestus scions were released and started over with new, plastic marines, selling my old metal SM lineup.

I bought Eldars but noticed quickly that they were too powerful to games of us. I switched them to Astartes and now I am satisfied.

I haven't gotten rid of Daemons/CSM completely but I'm trimming the fat. I'm sick of getting screwed over by Warp Storm/Instability/weak codex and am not willing to cheese out into Screamerstar/flying circus/etc. I'm sick of playing assault based armies in an edition that screws over assault.

Instead I bought into Dark Eldar with some Eldar allies to plug holes and will play that for the time being.

I'm likely to sell my few DA models, now I have an Imperial Fist army and enough experience to realise the codex is gak.

Other reason - impending financial doom. Paying the rent > toy soldiers :(

Lack of people to play against made me sell my BFG fleet, if the same happened with 40k I'd sell most of my armies off, that would probably be the only reason.

I was hoping for a new Eldar codex that would be toned down a little bit so that I could start using them again without feeling ashamed of myself.... now.... they will remain in their location on my shelf unless all the other armies gets buffed up significantly (which I highly doubt will ever happen)

I've pretty much shelved my Tau, because both the other people I play with also have Tau!

Bankruptcy is what would get me and the missus to part with our large and painstakingly built up warhammer collections. I've not given up on my Tyranids since I started playing them though and between the two of us whenever we get bored we can just switch to another army.

Armoured Battle Group: Buffed by 7th edition by being allowed to have obsec Leman Russes meant the in-built balancing feature to the army no longer existed, and I didn't feel right using them anymore at all.

Death Korps of Krieg Assault Brigade: Left behind by the power curve. Still break them out for specific games, but not being updated by FW to bring them at least to the same standard as the basic IG book, and seeing the power curve just get more and more insane just killed my desire to play them. Maybe they'll have another chance at life with the Imperial Army?

Minotaurs Space Marines: similar as above; power curve took them from being an alright army to 2nd tier to almost worthless against most codexes. I'm willing to tweak my armies as times change, but being so consistently made obsolete is frustrating to the point that I don't intend on spending any more money on them, I just don't see the point when they'll no doubt be made obsolete again in short order.

Instead, 30k Ahoy.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

I wouldn't/have never shelfed or sold an army. My group has no problems accommodating weaker armies so we all still have fun. Then again my armies tend to be varied in their units from buying models based on 'rule of cool' so there's less of a power flux when one particular unit gets nerfed.

Well, my Eldar army is still on the shelf.
The last codex was already too powerful and the new one is quite similar.
I play Necrons since then.

I put "Other" because all of the above.
Codex imbalance. It's the blandness and the disparity of power levels between codexes.

I sold my armies because of poor rules and poor internal and external codex balance.

Shelving would require everyone that plays near by to suddenly not play any more.

Then its right to the painting and modeling section for me.

Selling would require heavy financial trouble.

Nothing. I'd never sell any of the 5 armies I own. Too much time, love and attachment in them.
And if you play for fun or with friends every unit can still be used or viable to a lesser or greater degree.
Sure, if you want to win tourneys, there are armies that right now probably will be shelved but things come in swings and roundabouts.
Few armies since 2nd ed have had consistenly woeful rules or chances to shine (Queue up DA and Ork hate.....)
Just gotta bide your time.....

I've sold and shelved armies several times, for various reasons.
- Sold Dark Eldar when I reached army overload.
- Sold Kroot Mercs when I reached army overload.
- Shelved Dogs of War when GW pulled their Army Book
- Shelved Space Marines when GW got SM Codex crazy
- Shelved Eldar when I got tired of playing them non-stop
I ended up switching from being an Eldar player to being an IG player for many years.

But with the shiny new Eldar Codex, they're coming off the shelf!
Back in the game, baby!

I don't sell any of my models. If nothing else I'll strip them or re-prime them to test paint schemes on and such.

But as for actually shelving armies, it's more of a rules issue than anything. I've never actually been one of those WAAC type players. More times than not I play fluffy lists and have been known to actually write up a short narative in the past for my armies. But I'm 200% against this new allies system, 100% against house rules, and 90% forgeworld (mostly because FW never releases anything for my armies).

I've stopped playing 40k overall because GW just can't come up with a balanced rules system that can be played in a realistic timeframe. It was one thing when the rules were somewhat balanced but the games still took 2 to 3 hours to complete. But now that there's no attempt at a balanced product and the games still take 2-3 hours, it's just too much.

I only play 40k when I go to my parents house for holidays and get togethers as I left most of my stuff at their house and my youngest brother still lives there and still plays. So yea, I've pretty much shelved everything I own and since I've been playing since 2nd edition, that's quite a lot of stuff just sitting around.

About 3k pts of Chaos, about 3k points of Eldar, about 3k points or Dark Eldar, about 2k pts of Space Marines (Dark Angels), and about 1k - 1.5k of Tau and Ork. My brother had it easier as he's been Tyranid since day one and has about 10k worth of them all told. It's great looking at his collection because it's really just a 2-3k army rebuilt over and over as each generation of tyranids have changed in appearance over the past 15-20 years.

I'll put my army on a shelf when I'm done collecting and painting them. The opportunities to play will be very rare for me. No I won't sell them or give them away. I keep my old stuff like MTG and DnD as well as even to this day I run into a chance to play a game with someone else who has to blow the dust off his deck or pull out his old character sheets.

This. GW went from something very close to a meaningful, solid ruleset to the hot mess of 6E and into the random driven, "do what you want", Forge Narratives Harder mess of 7E just two years of 6E while fixing almost nothing, breaking more things, and raising the price.

As a premise and setting, 40k is awesome. As a game, its terrible as is the company creating it. I sold off entirely once 7E was confirmed in content and cost save my collection of rare pieces I want to paint and my entirely converted (and now unbound) Grey Knights army.

My hope is GW tanks and a company like FFG makes rules while outsourcing model creation.

I shelved nid after the change to 5th ed. Didn’t like where the army went. Poor genestealers.

I shelved Nurgle marines because of boredom. Nearly the same army since 4th ed. Other than the short time when no one wanted to face heldrakes.

My poor Iyandon barley got off the shelf before getting exiled. Only got to Play 2 games, 500points and 650 points. With them now, no one will ever want to face them again. 3k worth of stuff. 1000points of my finest painting work too.

Shelved my mono Khorne daemons because the modern lists could just humiliate the army. They are back as daemonkin plus they are 95% painted! So there’s hope for every wayward army.
