Nevermind avoid this thread. I found out only monstrous units can hold back a cannon's shot. That's rather disappointing.
That said if you have monstrous infantry you can use them to shield a large target against cannonballs. Might not always work though sadly.

What you CAN do with other units is screen the SPOT the cannonball wants to hit for maximum effect.
Most people aim for 10" in front of the back edge of the nice, juicy target they want to cannonize. If you place an infantry unit in front of that spot so they can't draw LOS to it... they have to chance shooting directly at the target, dramatically increasing the chances they'll overshoot it.
Bolt throwers are trickier in that giving a big target hard cover requires a large unit in front of it.

Remembers that cannons cannot target models. They can only target points on the table, points that are visible from the cannon itself.
You can block LoS to the table using units which restricts where the cannon can aim its initial point.

Not true, the rules are "your target does not have to be an enemy model; it can be a point on the ground if you wish" which means that as long as the cannon can see the target, units in front do not prevent it from being targeted.

You choose to target the ground instead of targeting the model. Which means, if you choose to target the model, you no longer have permission to start a cannon ball 10" in front of the back of the base.

Yeah you're right, just double checked and I stand corrected.

That is why, when you deploy terrain always place hills or towers on every side of the table. This way you can always shot over screening units.
