So when I got started in the hobby 10 years ago I started with guard and I still love them. I've been using the same basic army with some variations over the years. I've been pretty absent for a he past few years, though still buying and reading just not building, painting or playing. I've decided that with my return I'm going to start building a whole new army. The good part is that I have a lot of bits I've collected and never used. Was wondering what advice people can give me. Unlike before, this time I'm going to have my army planed out before building anything.

What kind of regiment? What theme?

There are some companies that sell some amazing looking Guardsmen.

I haven't figured all that out, part of the reason I'm asking for advice. I've got a whole mess of unbuilt Cadians as well as some recent purchase of Arcadians from Victoria Minatures that I plan to mix in. I've got some of the Scions that I'm going to build up. And considering building some of my empire and Bretonians from fantasy into IG as well. Not to mention getting my Titan and Reaver Titan repaired and game ready!

What I want to do is make a modular army that can be adjusted on the fly based on the opponent of the day.

The general theme is that they are defectors of the Imperium, but not chaos, just a group that has seen the Imperium for what it truly is... Heretics to the Emperor. They are still loyal to the true Imperium though, will fight for the Imperium. It's complicated. But as a result of this, they are made up of soldiers and units from all across the galaxy that fight together. If that makes sense

Heck, if thats what you are ding you could try something very different... make a very unique human army. Since they are free from the rules of the Imperium, perhaps they could advance their tech or at least branhc off.

Maybe they have mech suits for tanks or something. Or they could have regressed. I think the key to this would be to try make them stand out but still be easily recognizable as Guardsmen etc.

Have you seen these:

They could be awesome to start an advanced but seperate human fringe group. I dont know, heaps of cool options from heaps of places. Maybe you could mix in tech from the age where the emperor reigned?

Those are really nice models, I might pick some up to integrate into the force. It's to costly to buy the bits for a new full army, especially when I have so many things that are still waiting to get built. They do look like they'd make good Elysian standins though, which is what I might use them as.

This sounds like a classic 2E campaign army, composed of surviving bits of various regiments collected together under one banner from the largest remaining force.

I would suggest something like this:
Cadian Command Squad w/ Chimera

Cadian Infantry Platoon (small)
3 Veteran Squads of non-Cadian regiments w/ Chimera

2 Stormtrooper Squads
1 squad Ogryns w/ Chimera

Valkyrie for Stormtrooper
1 non-Cadian Vendetta

Cadian Leman Russ Squadron (2 tanks)
2 non-Cadian specialist Tanks

Unify all of the units with a common Regimental marking, perhaps a big Orange ID panel.
