Hello hello!
I'm getting back into the 40k game, I want to play guard (astra militarum) for the first time.
I was wondering if you could take conscripts without them being part of an infantry platoon? So I don't have to fork out points on the platoon command squad and troops!

Nope. Sorry. The conscripts (and any other platoon squads) are only available as part of a platoon.

Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

Welcome to Dakka!

I afraid Conscripts only come as part of a Platoon. But they're so damn cheap that even buying the minimum requirements for each Platoon still allows you to throw down a ton of bodies for minimal points. Also, if you start equipping your PCS with 4 Flamers each, you'll learn to love them. Nothing says 'revenge' like dropping 4 templates point blank on the unit that just butchered you Infantry Squad!

Also note that special weapons squads can take flamer throwers, the unit is dirt cheap and really puts out that firepower. I enjoy hiding them around the table and surprising things that outflank/deep strike into my zone.

Conscripts are the best unit in the Imperial Guard Codex. Don't be scared to pay the tax to get them on the field.

What models are you guys using for conscripts? Anything special or just cadians?

I use Vostroyans as my guardsmen and CADIAN SCUM as my conscripts.

And I paint every single one as the "donkey-caves" from space balls, with big goofy crossed eyes.

LOL

I was looking at maybe doing something different to go with my Catachans, but the models are so expensive in metal. Maybe I will just stick with Cadians and try to find them used.

A friend of mine uses these WW2 sovjet troops for his conscripts. He gets them a fair whack cheaper than Cadians (something like 10 scrubs for £15) - I'll try to find the name of you would like.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

Warlord games does cheap WW2 infantry for conscripts.

Wargames factory survivors make great conscripts as well.
