I see that you can pick up the PDF version for about $5.99 USD or the psychical copy off ebay (it's OOP) for around $19.99.

I know that the psychical version comes with dice, a movement guide and all the pieces on cardboard a opposed to having to print off everything from the pdf version.

Anybody have experience with the pdf?

I have the 2014 box set ... the cars are nice to have in a heavy stock so they don't blow around as easily but you might be able to solve for that at a print shop. The best thing about the box set IMO is the box.

I've considered getting the pdf, then sticking the printouts onto foamcore.

Might be pretty nice having the extra thickness on the vehicle tokens.

I still have the deluxe set from the 80s, it is a great game. I'd fork out for the proper game, it will cost you a fortune to print it.

Depends on how much Car Wars you want.

If you're new to the game, get the PDF and print out stuff. Then, if you like the game, start looking at physical product. Many Car Wars gamers have made their own copies.

A reprint is coming with a MSRP of $20, so you can get it cheaper at an OLGS.

EDIT: N/M! BGW has the game on sale for $13! Get some dice games, Army Painter sets, and *bam* reach the $100 free shipping threshold.

I have seen the "free" Car Wars PDF, and I own original hardcopy. Hardcopy is worth the cost of print - the professional print quality is clearly better than laser.

I dropped out of the loop, but my understanding is that they are working up to a kickstarter release of a new edition.

CW uses a lot of counters. Having something better then paper is nice to use. I’m not sure what the cost to print something onto cardstock is, but I suspect it might just be easier to grab one of the old sets.

Wow I wasn't expecting this many replies! Glad to see car wars is still a well liked game. I've played car wars a few times and I love the game, The person who ran the games I played in had his original stuff for it so he had lost the tokens long and had some printed.

It seems like to me I'm going to go with the psychical copy. Thanks for the help everyone!

The most recent KS was for arena maps in that same old SJG style.

That looks awesome, I loved playing this game and I can't wait to get my gaming group back into it (we lost the original GM for it.)

It looks like they are still hammering things out for the 6th edition rules, so it’s not going to kickstarter yet. Not sure on the timeframe for that.

My understanding is that CW 6E is going to be a big break from what we've seen before, with movement more like X-wing than Classic, and 3X scale like 5E. Is that the right summary?

It will still be SJG so I am guessing lots of clunk without much bang.

Personally, I'm not much enthused for CW 6E.

Not too long ago, I made the mistake of replaying Classic CW with my buddy, and the clunkiness was just too much for him, whereas I was still bolstered by nostalgia.

OTOH, X-wing was just fine, because neither of us came in with any preconceptions or history. Thing is, simplifying CW to X-Wing makes it not the game it was.

I was participating in the closed forums for CW 6e, but after a while I realized that no mater what happened, I’d not be picking it up. I played a lot of the classic version. But I was younger then, and was more into gritty, hyper detailed systems. I’ve got a lot of nostalgia tied up in the old ways, but I suspect that that kind of game would not sell well these days. So rather then try to hold back the game I remember with my old curmudgeonly ways, I thought I’d just bow out and let the voice of people who are more in tune with gamers these days rise unclouded to the top. I’ve still got shelves of old stuff if I want to play. Not that I know anyone who wants to play the old game anymore; we’ve all moved on.
