So a friend of mine is selling off his old armies (he has three) and offered me 1500 points worth of necrons for less then 100 dollars. Would you guys buy it? Thats a HUGE discount! And he offered it to me first because he knows I've always been fond of his crons, he is actually the person who got me into WH40k way back in the day.

So, ~$100 1500 point army? What do you guys think?

only if you want it... buying something because its cheap is a waste of money.

Simple really, do you want it? If not, better off putting that 100 bucks in your savings account.

I don't know, I'm kinda torn. This was the army that got me into war hammer, and even if I never played it, I would like to keep it as a showpiece/memento. On the other hand, I heard a lot about Newcron cheese and not sure if I want to become that guy.

Maybe. If it's not in terrible condition I might do it. $100 is pretty cheap for a 1500pt army, you could check the swap shop or ebay and see what similar forces go for.

If it's painted decently I'd snap it up and just have it as a secondary force. If I have to repaint it I'd spend a bit more time thinking if I can be bothered repainting it.

I'd probably buy it, if only to flip it.

I have bought several whole armies used. In fact, the core of ALL of my armies were purchased used. Never regretted a single one.

Does it matter if its cheese as long as you like it?? Your only TFG if your playing to beat everyone into the ground, if you like something play it and ignore the internet!

But as above, buying something because its cheap is a huge waste of money! Buy it if your going to play it!

Yea well, already bought it. Just called him and told him I'd take them.

If i remember correctly, the models are:
1 lord or overlord
80 Warriors
5 destroyers
And a Ctan shard

Not the most competitive list, but still super cool

Now you need 8 ghost arks!

US$ 100 for all those models are pretty cheap. I'm spending the same amount on 2 hammerheads down here, and that's because the seller is doing a nice conversion tax

My Daemons and Orks are about 90% second hand, although technically my Daemons are not since they still came in their boxes. At that point I just wanted the models to play a game and went with what was cheapest.

My Dark Eldar are entirely first hand since I wanted to build and paint from the ground up.

I would if its something i wanted

But the double edge sword of buying off a friend is that that friend might not be playing anymore leaving you with two armies and less people to play with.

Hmm. I can only imagine the nightmare that a Decurion containing 80 warriors is going to be.

Personally, I wouldnt have bought it. When I decide to start a new army (aka purchase a new range of miniatures) I want as much variety in my army as possible to showcase as much of the range as possible, without taking absolutely useless units and still maintaining a somewhat well functioning army.

Spamming the same unit over and over and over again....where's the fun in that? I guess you can make an exception when it comes to Necrons, since legions of warriors are part of their charm, but personally variety is the spice of life for me.

If it wasn't painted, maybe. I hate cleaning minis.

I think that is awesome. Don't worry about becoming TFG - not everyone with a great army is automatically unfun to play against.

Indeed its how you carry your self.

Though prepare for the stigma you will need to over come.

I own 10k or so of 40k stuff, and haven't bought any of it new at all.

Don't have much of a choice down here though

Nope. For me painting is the biggest part of the hobby, so I only buy second hand minis if they are metal as they can be stripped to new with acetone.

An entirely metal second hand army would likely cost a fortune though, more than a new plastic army :-p

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I'm happy to buy second hand items. I'm actually going to be doing a whole slew of purchases here soon for my Red Corsairs. Painted stuff from every Chapter I can come across. My army is going to be friggin colorful.

The amount of times I've tried and failed to drill this into my other half's head.

Me: why did you buy that?

Her: it was on offer!

Me: but... what is it actually for/where are you going to put it?

Her: dunno, but it was cheap.

Me:

Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek)

Of course you should take it

In 40k dollars that's super cheap, you might regret it if you walk away from it, and you don't HAVE to use every model. And of course you can add to it. As an added bonus most necron warriors look pretty similar, so it's not like you have to worry about Eldar painted Beil-Tan, or Space Marines painted Black Templars, when you want to play Alaitoc or Ultramarines.

Do it.
If it is a well made army you could always try to sell it for profitss if you decide you don't want it. $100 for 1500pts is a steal.

Glad to hear you got it. Out of curiosity, is it painted? If it is, then you've got a ready-to-go army that you can play anytime you need a change of pace and that's pretty amazing. Also, consider that having another army ready to go is great for teaching others the game.

Even unpainted it's a good deal for you of course.

Just playing Necrons isn't necessarily cheesy or bad. Just avoid the netlists and you'll do fine. That's a great deal.

Sure, my son plays an army I purchased on E-bay, and he's been happy with it for years.
