I've been looking at the crimson death formation as my list lacks anit-flyer. However it is 440 points so it needs to do a lot more than kill flyers to earn its keep, any opinions on how good it is and if it has a place in a tournament level list?

Also does it come in from reserve on a single roll or do you roll for each?

The formation says it requires 3 crimson hunters. Doesn't say if it needs to a squadron or not.
If you can run it as 3 different units (and I don't see why you cannot) it's pretty strong. You're able to split up the fire so you're not over-killing.
The problem I have with it is, 440 points is a lot. It might be a lot more durable, but it's not that overwhelming of firepower as eldar can get elsewhere.
You really need to be firing at high toughness targets, 2+ armor, or flyers to get the value out of the firepower. Otherwise you'd be better off with objective secure bikes.

Thats interesting, I was also thinking of it from a reserve rolls point of view in that there is only a small chance at least 1 wont come on turn two which should deal with most other list's flyers.

It is a lot of points but its only 20 points more than war walkers with the same number of bright lances (2 squads of 3 at 210pts each) and more durable plus sky fire.

It was also shockingly each to get into my list when I tried - I just removed a unit of d-scythe guard and their transport and some warp spiders

GASP removing D-scythes and warp spiders? Whats next heretic, no bikes?

Going on to the question I think that taking the star cannon upgrades on one of them is best, preferably the Exarch if he still has the Precision shot rule.

It is actually a godsend formation for Harlequin players. It answers our problems with heavy armor and anti air while keeping to our glass cannon theme. I would run it, but I rely on the night wing interceptors from forge world for my flyers.

Its a tourney level formation that will slot into many, many armies. The perfect detachment to take if you need help with anti-air or anti-tank.

Hunters can't be taken in squadrons... so its 3 independent models - much like any other multi unit formation.

My bad. I saw the 1 exarch per detachment and thought it was 1 per unit.
