The conventional wisdom is to go with the army whose models you like the most, but I'm in a position of liking only a select few models of each army. Generally I'm more of a vehicle/beast person than an infantry guy, but I actually don't like a lot of the main chassis for various factions. I'm not a huge fan of the Leman Russ and Chimera chassis (and the Taurox is hideous) and the Baneblade chassis is only so-so - but I really like the Macharius, and the Malcador is pretty cool as well. Unfortunately, even though the Malcador is supposed to be directly equivalent to a Leman Russ it's a lord of war so you can generally only take one - and you then end up with an infantry-heavy army, which is the opposite of what I want. When it comes to aircraft, I like the Thunderbolt, Avenger and Vulture and adore the Marauder (the destroyer variant is of my favourite models of all time, actually) but I dislike the Valkyrie and Vendetta. The Arvus is pretty decent and the Aquila was really cool before FW discontinued it, but they're more niche. I really like the Tauros as well and the drop Sentinel looks pretty cool but the normal model is kinda eh.

When it comes to line troops, I'm not a fan of most of the IG infantry but I do really like Rough Riders. Unfortunately the only way to run them as the core of a force is the DKoK death rider formation, and they can't take special weapons and lose access to most of the vehicles I actually like, which is incredibly frustrating.

Obviously I only covered AM, but there are little niggles like this for every army (including all the FW lists) that put me off. It's really frustrating.

How do you feel about Rhino chassis?

Im the same. The only force I can somewhat settle on is the Harlequins and the Imperial Guard. But no army is fully what I want, so many have dumb bits things I cannot ignore that make it very hard for me to simply like a force.

My tastes in IG are similar to yours... like very in vehicle tastes. I love infantry though, just none of the GW ones.

What helped me actually settle on an army was non GW models. Especially with the Imperial guard.

I'm feeling something opposite. I love the dark eldar models. dem ships. But I'm not a fan of the hedonistic, strangely BDSM cocaine addict fluff. Sounds like the sexual fantasies of a neckbeard who lives in his parents basement haha.

Heh, don't worry, the BDSM Ninja Space Elves leave most lifestylers scratching their heads too.

Well, assuming your choices were too random and all over the place...why not just pick and choose, even mix factions and perhaps convert them similarly and fudge up the lore into an odd, mercenary-esque mix. Or better yet, look into altering the vehicle and such to your preference!

That is one of the best things I like about 40k, is that you really get as much as you want out of the models. And the laxness in how you build armies in 7th helps you pick and choose when you really want to bring.

Even without the right formations and being forced to go unbound sometimes, you'd be easier convincing people to play you because you're not ABUSING unbound.

I say list out what you DO like, and see if you can connect the dots from there. Who knows, that may even add to the fun!

The correct question is, would I be enjoying this hobby if I did this?

The correct audience is you.

Insulting posts in this thread aside, if you feel this way, just pick the models you DO like and to unbound. Or buy minis you enjoy from a different company and run them as whatever you want them to be.

I do quite like the sisters. The base Rhino is a little ugly but I like the Deimos pattern. I really liked the old utilitarian Exorcist that FW used to make (sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who misses all the stuff they discontinued to make room for HH). The main thing that puts me off sisters is the horrifically expensive metal sculpts. I could buy shiny FW resin infantry for much cheaper that would be nicer sculpts.

It's interesting you mention the harlequins since the (fairly similar) Eldar corsairs are one of the factions I do quite like. Unfortunately the army list hasn't been updated since 5th edition the variety within the list is pretty low (partially because I dislike the Falcon chassis) so it's a bit of a non-starter. There's also the fact that the Vampire and Phoenix are probably pretty close to being discontinued.

On the IG front my FLGS is Warhammer World so I don't have the luxury of being able to use non-GW figures. If not for that I might consider some kind of swamp guard with hovercrafts and such.

The DE are definitely an interesting case. Like you I think the Raider chassis is quite nice (and I love the Tantalus) but the rest of the army doesn't do much for me. I'd love to see a DE superheavy flier (I think that's the only justifiable SH I could see the DE using) but until then they're not quite there.

I think I was expecting to like the Admech stuff more than I do. If they had a bunch of cool eccentric tanks like the HH mechanicum do I would be more sold (the WIP ordinatus is gorgeous) but as-is they're kind of an infantry army.

You definitely bring up an interesting point. I've considered some kind of interesting counts-as army a few times, but I don't have a lot of modelling skill. Ideally I'd commission my army rather than build it myself, which makes extensive conversion work awkward.

A. Rude.
B. Army fluff is a sort of advertisement for them. The appeal of the Guard is that they're average men and women doing their job and holding the line against all the sub and superhuman forces that threaten humanity. Space Marines are a bunch of Arnolds in Powered Armor etc. If DE fluff doesn't appeal to you fine, but don't make insulting assumptions about people it does appeal too.
C. I had a similar problem getting into 40k, I literally looked at every single army and didn't find one that quite fit, then I found DE.

Sorry if I came off insulting, I had no intention to insult people. I wasn't entirely serious when I said it, was a sort of failed attempt at humour.

I like the looks of IG, but not the way they are played right now. I kind of a liked GK too, because of how cheap they were to make in 6th, but the army was already taken when I started.
All other armies seem rather ugly to me.

Yes, it's why I play rogue trader.

You die so often in that game that you play all the factions at least once. (Well, in our group at least, consult your local inquisition. Results will never vary.)

That's funny, because I gel with so many of the factions. The only faction I'm not "gel'ed" with is Imperial Guard and Chaos -- and I have probably 7,000 points of IG... though mostly old models that are back from the days when there were a lot fewer factions.

My favorite factions, in order, from the standpoint of aesthetic and fluff are space marines (including DA/BA, which I count as close-to-vanilla), Grey Knights (what's not to love?), Eldar, Dark Eldar, Skitarii, Sisters, Space Wolves, Necron, Tyranid, Ork. I have playable forces of almost all of those too No painted Skitarri or Necron :( but I certainly have buckets of models ready for the brush. Other than Marshmallow Puffboy, I love the Cult, too.

Tau don't quite make the list, as I don't identify with them; odd, as I'm a big robotech/macross fan. Chaos marines/daemons I've never been a fan of (I like playing the good guys, what can I say), and Imperial Guard is just too much like modern-day military (not scifi enough). But IG do have nice tanks and flyers Harlequins, Inquisition, Assassins, Militarum I don't really consider factions -- I love them all except the ugly Taurox, but they're just add-on allies for other factions.

I was the same till I tried GK, now I find that's the only army I play... I've tried them all, honestly sometimes you have to find one thing you like about an army and build around it!

I hate that several factions I fell in love with- Kroot Mercs and Space Wolves 13th company, are not playable past 5th edition.

Guard are the only army I really totally gel with. There are a few other armies I'd like to start that I like specific sub factions of (Orks Speed Freaks come to mind), but just don't have the desire to spend that much on a second army.

I'm also a somewhat poor painter/modeller and wouldn't do justice to some of those armies, namely orks.

I love the IG vehicles, but hate the Cadian gorilla mutants. Luckily there are 3rd party miniatures to fill that gap. And Chaos renegades. I love my Chaos renegades.

With Space Marines I really like their infantry (except they should be larger) but dislike their vehicles (METAL BAWKSES!)

The only faction I totally agree with are Dark Eldar. I just love their models and their moustache-twirling evilness turned up to eleven.
