Hello Dakka,

I am looking for recommendations for a base model to begin work on an Astartes without armour. I've looked at the Ogre Kingdoms line and haven't found anything as of yet that looks suitable. My visual target is what you'd imagine, the heavily muscled, super-soldier Rugby player with augmentations and implants;

My goal is two-fold; to true-scale the miniature, and to only use miniatures from Games Workshop.

Regards,
S.

Oh, Gor herd, very likely. The need to head-swap is actually a benefit, because small heads in big chests will make them look larger. OTOH, marines' faces in Horus Rising are called equine and affected by gigantism, so maybe beast heads are good after all.

Ogres are much too big, bigger than 610cm would be.

mad robot do some good alternate ogryns called jovian hammers that look more like large humans. ive considered getting them as unarmoured SM for my alpha legion myself.

Well if we take 28mm to represent 5'9" then Gunnery Sergeant Harker stands approximately 7' tall. The problem is that he's metal but he would make a good base for an unarmoured space marine.

If you aren't so fussed about the model being perfectly to scale, and more heroic, then the Khorne Wrathmongers have an unarmoured torso that looks like it could work well and I have seen the kit used in true-scale. Off the top of my head I can't think of any decent bare legs though that would fit with them though; with some relatively hefty modification Savage Orc legs could be lengthened and reposed and you could even repurpose one of their torso's as well I would imagine, chopping away the throat and resculpting the pectorals. I guess in that case I would use the Savage Orc Big Boss, converting the torso as I've said, and lengthening and reposing the legs.

You can find an unarmoured, 54mm scale Space Marine in my gallery images if you think that might be of some use in your project.

the issue here is scale though. because even if you true scale your marines (which i do) they still dont really represent how they are described in novels etc. because even upscaled SM are basically still just guardsmen in scale if you consider the extra bulk and height their PA should give them. the problem arises here when you consider that the jovian hammers i mentioned are 44mm tall, and i assume the GW ogryns are similar. my tallest upscaled SM are about 38 mm tall, so youd have un armoured SM taller than their armoured brothers.

OK -- these are great suggestions, I'll look at the Ogryn and Wrathmongers as a start! Thanks!

I don't get why you're limiting yourself to only gw stuff considering they most certainly are not remotely true scale nor do they really make something that is a good starting point for your project. There are lots of great miniature companies out there & I don't think gw is your best bet for this.

That's another issue entirely. Only having a gw store nearby would suck for many reasons but the OP never said that nor is the rule 100% GW only parts last I checked anyway.

It's a legit question since the OP wants true scale. I see no need for snark.

Not really Snark.

How is availability of play areas not a relevant issue?

If its the case that OP never stated that the only store for him is a GW one then its still possible that it IS the case.

Marauders or Catachans won't work for you?

If you use older IG or LotR figures around them they should look the right size.
