Subject: Which Lord of War/Superheavy in an Imperium of Man army?
|

Hi everyone!
Before I elaborate on my question I want to say thanks for all the good replies that I've so far received to each and every one of my threads! This forum is a really awesome and knowledgable place!
On to my Q: So our resident Eldar has his gargantuan Wraith Knight now, and our Necron player just purchased his very own Tesseract. Now I know that Super Heavies can be overrated and you don't need one to counter one, but this gives me the perfect excuse to heavily think about getting such a monster to support my new Space Wolves!
So, to all of you having experience with (Imperium of Man) Super Heavies - which one do you like best and why? Which one would you recommend? Or maybe you bought one and are disappointed with it?
Personally I think the Fellblade looks pretty bad ass, but also a Knight would look awesome with my Space Wolves I reckon, with a contrasting color scheme and such. Or maybe something totally different?

What does your army require? IoM have a large variety of LoW to choose from, each offering something different.

Now I've only just started my Space Wolves, so I don't yet have a super clear idea how every unit fits into my whole game plan, but how I would like to play them is as a very agressive Drop Pod force with a strong long range fire support base in the back, most likely with on a Skyshield Landing Pad or in a Bastion.
So I guess ideally a Super Heavy would draw attention away from my TWC and Drop Pod units, basically another threat to make it very difficult for my opponent to target prioritize.

Long range fire support - I'd vouch for the Fellblade. Normally I would recommend a Typhon Heavy Seige Tank but it's a S10 Blast that Ignores cover so scatter badly and you could end up losing some TWC.
Distraction unit - probably an Imperial Knight of sorts.

Yeah but I don't like the model all that much, or the fact that the Wolflord himself would show up in a small scale battle.

Well, if the WK has D weapons, bringing your own Super Heavy might be the wrong answer :(

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

I think Knights look way cooler than super heavy tanks. So just looking at the rule of cool I'd go with a Knight.
I also agree that a Wraith Knight would just destroy whatever super heavy you bring so I wouldn't get one just for that. Get one because you want a centre piece for your army.

Warhound Titan with twin Turbo-Laser destructors. Sure, it's spendy, but it's good.
Just put all of your eggs (and dollars) in that one big basket, and park it in front of the WraithKnight.

If you're looking to win in a hilariously one-sided manner, take a Titan with D-weapons.
If you want to run a superheavy that won't make people hate you, a Baneblade variant (except for the Fellblade/Shadowsword) is quite reasonable and fun.

The Fellblade / Shadowsword are pretty weak for their points. I would not worry about them.

I highly recommend a Knight. It's way more fun to use than a Baneblade, and you can either add overall firepower to your army or give it a Strength D chainsword to take out those enemy superheavies.

Storm Lord, pile in a bunch of Wolf guard in the back with combi-meltas and use the vulkan mega bolter while you speed towards what ever needs to be melta'd to death.
It is super ineffective but would be fun and funny to watch it work

The Typhon is probably your best pickup in terms of power. It won't actually do that much damage to the Wraithknight outside of a reasonably lucky tank shock, but the 7" ignores cover S10 AP2 blast will crush the rest of his army with ease and it's cheap enough that you aren't crippled if a lucky shot pops it. If he runs heavy wraithcannons you'll want to make use of cover and pray he doesn't roll a 6 (which oneshots you) but outside of that it should wreck jetbikes and wraithguard with ease.
You could also consider the Marauder Destroyer. It's a flyer so the Wraithknight can barely touch you and it packs a huge amount of firepower and some nasty bombs. Its still going to struggle actually killing the WK but if he runs lots of guardians and aspect warriors the bombs will have a field day.

I've been having the same thoughts for my Blood Angels actually. I'm somewhat set on a Knight Crusader for some firing support, though there are plenty of other options out there. Imperial Knights just look awesome as well in my opinion.

Thank you for all your good replies! Mulling it over I'll probably end up going with a knight, due to the cool looks and towering appearance. Also I can use some nice contrasting colors, maybe some red or green.
