Please keep opinions of whether or not such things are morally just, I'm only interested in the facts if you loverly people don't mind.
Thanks all
I would suggest researching some general academic articles on music and movie piracy and how it impacts that industry. Things to look for might include the fact that all industry funded studies say piracy is destroying the industry. All 3rd party and neutrally funded studies say piracy is more of a free advertising sort of thing.
In general, you'll see two schools of thought here, and without having access to recaster financials, you'll never know which is true.
#1 - Everytime you buy a $50 retail price from a recaster for less,
GW is losing a $50 sale. This tends to be a false as you're making the assumption that the buyer would been willing to pay the higher price if the recast wasn't available. In reality, some will and some won't. So, does
GW lose out on sales? Sure. Do they lose out on 100% of the sales? No.
#2 - "I wasn't gonna pay
GW their crazy prices, so I'm not hurting anyone by buying from a recaster." Well, for the same reasons above, you might be. By supporting the recasters, you're enabling a system wherein other people choose the cheaper and less legal option when they'd possibly be willing to buy the real item.
I wish you luck in writing your article, but I think it's going to be mostly an opinion piece. I also think that if you get anyone to actually post links to recaster sites that this thread will be shut down almost immediately.
