I'm doing the usual bit for picking a creating my army. I read a bunch, love the aesthetics and fluff of Orks so I chose Orks. Got my initial 'garbage squad' consisting of a boss, 10 boyz and a trukk now to see if my colour schemes I chose will work out and if changes need to be made. I actually know all the Orks I'm going to buy (lots, enough to field almost any of the Ork detachments) but instead of just grinding through 12 boxes of boyz in a row (which will be painting punishment if I don't reward myself with characters and vehicles inbetween) I want to build up so that I can start playing relatively soon as I can. I got 2 books I'm writing as I go, one for the painting schemes I decide to stick with so that I can repeat the same across the army as needed and the other will be my army lists. What are the common point limits used? At what point does the game become kill team or apocalypse?

Kill teams tends to be 200-300 points.
Apocalypse tends to be 3k or over.

A lot of people play 1500, 1850 (probably the most common tourney value,) or 2000.

20000+ points

Most of the local tournaments I've played in at my FLGS are 1850 points. It provides a balanced game (unless one player is Eldar or Necrons! Lol JK! ). After playing in these, anything much smaller just doesn't feel like 40k, but that's probably in my head. 1000 points is a good fast casual game, good for learning!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Ok cool this helps. I was trying to get the gist of it form looking at threads posting lists. The numbers are all over the place though and I was kinda going with increments of 250 but then the 1850 threw me off and yet appears to be a common number used. Now I see why. 3k and up for Apocalypse? Not bad, I'm sure I'll have much more then that when done.

Smallest to largest most common point values are roughly:
500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1850, 2000, 2500.

3000+ is, as said by niv-mizzet, is usually apocalypse.

1750 exists and is somewhat prevalent, just for reasons unbeknownst to me people prefer 1850.

I've seen 500, 600, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, 1850, 2000, 2500, and 3000+

The first 4 are great for learning, as this means you're normally just adding one or two squads on at a time. 1250 is a "quick" standard battle. 1500 is a "quackish" battle. 1750/1850 (this is normally one or the other, depends on the FLGS and members) is the "standard" that I've seen. 2000 is a full game. 2500 is normally "large" battles. 3k and higher is apocalypse.

3500 Imperium army

1250 Nidzilla

1000 Chaos army

1000 Drukhari Raiding Force
