I have some very nicely painted Blood Ravens that I got off ebay (and don't want to repaint them) but I want to play Space Wolves for the CQC. Could I say that Blood Ravens are a successor chapter of Space Wolves and play them as such?

Sure, as long as the models are WYSIWYG.

I'm still a noob to the tabletop game; is there any difference between Vanilla marine models and Space Wolves? I've spent £60 on just over 1k of Space Marines and don't want it to be for nothing (I have a squad of assault terminators, a dreadnought, an ironclad, 3 tac marine squads, a librarian, a chaplain, and a command squad)

SW are a divergent chapter and have their own codex.

Space Wolves tend to have Close Combat Weapons. The stock grey hunter has BP/Bolter, which most of your models probably have. If you want to add CCW though, you'd need to model it.

very common to have people use space marines of one faction or another with another factions rules.

No one really cares, just make sure they know what chapter's rules you are using !

I'll just chime in to concur with everyone else here. People do "counts-as" armies all the time, it's not a big deal at all, so long as you tell your opponent and the weapons are as they should be. Not only is it not a problem for me, but when people do cool counts-as conversion armies, I applaud their creativity.

Blood Ravens do not who their progenitor is, but the Wolves had only one successor, which ended in a disaster.

That having been said, their is nothing wrong with your Company starting to use Space Wolf tactics and practices in their methodology.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

How you paint your wolves is up to you; but i will comment on 1 thing: space wolves do not have ironclad dreads(count as a venerable may work depending on how you built it; sw vens do not have hurricane bolters, but can get an effin huge axe which thw hammer could count as).

Also if you get a sw troop box(builds grey hunters and blood claws, and has bits for converting scouts to the Elite bfr wolf scouts), then you could build a few ccw guys to add to your tacs for the upgrade(np one will care if you have 1 chainsword guy in a unit and claim the whole unit has ccws).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

The Blood Ravens steal everything.

Even chapter tactics of other chapters. Even Chaos.

You can make them whoever you like!

No, because that would be Alpha Legion.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
