Subject: Fluffwise, would the Crimson Fists Chapter have a Contemptor dreadnought?

I've been considering adding a Contemptor dread to my Crimson Fists force, but fluffwise I don't think they would have one unless Alexis Polux took a few with him from the Imperial Fists armoury and re-painted them. Would it work if I just used an Imperial Fists one that they had inherited?

You could do that, and then add paint scratches with the IF yellow underneath

Why not? It makes sense that 2nd founding chapters would be granted some of the equipment from their parent Legion. It's also hinted that Contemptors are still produced, but in ridiculously small amounts. For example, look at this fella Same goes for other relics really - Deredeo's, Sicarans, Typhon's etc.

I'd wait until FW does an FAQ giving them four attacks though. Specifically that Minotaurs character. If regular dreads get that many, their variations should too.

Fluff wise I'd say no, when the fortress went boom they lost the entire chapter pretty much and there is no mention of a contemptor in the rynns world book or any of the fluff, when they started to rebuild things like normal dreads could be replaced, tanks too, but not Contemptors.
But all that said, go ahead if you like the model

They could have had a Contemptor on one of their Battle Barges. Remember they were a Fleet Based Chapter before they were awarded with Rynn's World.

Yeah, this is an extremely narrow view on things.
First, Rynn's World was published a few months before Forgeworld even released the Contemptor dreadnought. Not that the author couldn't have known about it, but it would be very strange for them to reference a vehicle that wasn't even for sale or known to the general public in a novel (especially one of the Space Marine Battles novels, which are less books and more all-text advertisements).
Second, omission from a novel says nothing about whether the chapter did or did not have them. There are probably a number of weapons and pieces of wargear that aren't mentioned in the book (even ones that did exist in GW's stock list at the time) and that doesn't mean the Crimson Fists didn't have access to them.
Third, as has been mentioned, they lost a lot of the chapter, but not the entire chapter, when the fortress-monastery went up, just like they lost a lot of relics, but not all their relics. Being a second founding chapter it's almost a given they had contemptors, and it's totally plausible some were currently with the fleet, or were in the field, when the explosion happened.
And fourth, the Crimson Fists existed for thousands of years before the Rynn's World incident. You can run a totally normal space marine list and say it's from M39 instead of M41 and no one can touch you.
I would have no problem with a Crimson Fists player running a Contemptor, even post-Rynn's World, and no further justification is needed. There's certainly no need at all to do something silly like make yellow paint showing through - after 10,000 years and who knows how many battles and repairs, there's probably not a speck of original paint on the thing anyway.
Now if you're running a list with 3 Contemptors in it and claiming it's after the Rynn's World incident, I might raise a mild objection...

You want a Contemptor? Forge that narrative, my friend! En route to a planet besieged by Orks, Veteran Sergeant Redfistius and his men receive a very faint, automated distress signal bearing the ident codes of Mars. Redfistius diverts his strike force to answer this faint call. The call is traced to an asteroid with an underground research facility that has long since been abandoned. There are signs of damage everywhere, with corroded bits of power armor scattered amongst scraps of Tyranid carapace. Redfistius explores the facility and encounters a locked vault in the center of the asteroid. Upon opening the vault, a pristine Contemptor Dreadnought chassis in a stasis field is discovered. It has no markings and is clad in unadorned, grey ceramite. Redfistius's Techmarine says a quick prayer to the Omnissiah and then another to the Contemptor's machine spirit before packing it into a crate and bringing it along, to be ultimately handed over the Crimson Fists' Master of the Forge. Boom. The Crimson Fists now have a Contemptor Dread chassis. For further fluff fun times, use the above, but give the Contemptor grey arms with Crimson hands. Say the grey is bare ceramite left that way to appease the machine spirit of an ancient, 10,000 year old relic.
