I have just started collecting space wolves, and I have a 1500 points list but then litterally a week later while painting them up the new Space Marines Codex came out and I was wondering: can I use the new formations?

For example can I use the skyhammer formation? if I am space wolves? Or the gladius formation with the free transports? what is the situation

The Formations and Detachments in the new Codex: Space Marines are only available to Space Marines.

You cannot get benefits from 2 codexs, you can use the space wolf or use them as a successor chapter of spacewolf using the space marine codex.

Correct, but they can still be in your army, but have to take Codex (or Forgeworld) Chapter Tactics and not Space Wolf special rules.

Of course, how they are painted is up to you.

So it is left to basically.proxying them as space marines? Seems odd.

Never mind tho

Skyhammer at least isn't in the codex, so maybe that marvelous example of game balance is available to you

No, it is still Faction Space Marines. The icon up top says so. And Space Wolves don't have Assault Squads or Devestators so... No.

But, there is no rule saying you can't ally in a Formation of Imperial Fists for example from the C:SM into your Space Wolf Army. They aren't Wolves, but oh well. Paint their shoulder pad a different and recognizable color and there ya go.

Its really no weirder than any other codex not using the marine formations. Whilst space wolves might look similar and share some unit profiles they are a seperate army with their own codex.

Can us guys on Baal get the demi-company since we're probably more codex compliant than the Dark Angels?

Oh wait we do get one in exterminatus but it does absolutely nothing!

Can we get a real one?

Same boat as DAngels and SWolves.

One problem with not being joined to the hip to the Codex in question like the Codex-adherent Chapters should be (but that is a different discussion and not for rules).

DAngels will get a Demi-Company, its in this weeks white dwarf, not sure what perks it gives though, probably still better BAngels pointless exterminatus ones

To be comletely RAW, Skyhammer Annihilation Force doesn't list what faction it belongs to.

Obviously Space Wolves can't use it. They don't have Assault Squads or Devestator Squads.

Less obviously, Blood Angles and Dark Angels both do.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Only if you can't read a datasheet.

Faction is posted in the symbol of the top-middle of the datasheet.

In the case of the Skyhammer, it is the one of Codex Addptus Astartes Space Marines.

You can use Skyhammer formation (and any from SM codex) with your BA/SW/DA/Inq/SoB/AM/Skii/CM/MT/LotD armies, or even xenos and chaos! allies rules allow that.

What you can't do is use Skyhammer and any formations from SM codex as if they were from SW/DA/BA/Inq... codex. Space Marines is a codex, Space Wolves is ANOTHER codex. You can't have models with rules from both books. Skyhammer units and models have rules from Space Marines codex, not Space Wolves.

IF SW/DA/BA could use SM stuff at will, noone would field SM codex armies at all. and fluff has no bearing on rules (being more codex-compliant don't give you the access to those formations with BA units)
