I know the DA codex is still pretty new, but I'm interested in an almost entirely DW army. Are they still too overpriced and too few to be a decent army? Ideally I'd like to run them as troops to deepstrike and some Knights in a LandRaider with a Chaplain.

well, you'd have to be Unbound to use them as Troops. Right now the army is, hmmm how to say it, mostly unplayable.

I get the feeling this is a flame thread in the making

Im not a big DAs fan, but are there any good terminator formations? Maybe you use a vanilla marines formation. Sadly GW has determined that Terminators will suck forever. Its been 2 editions of SM fans begging & screaming for improvements to Terminators & they gave us centurions. So make sure you play against a friend with an all terminator army, because you'll only stand a chance against a self-nerfed army.

I think there is both a (possibly good with some shenanigans) Land Raider formation and a 1HQ two Elite formation. I would think you could certainly take a two formation army and have lots of good fun with a fortress of Land Raiders hiding some shooty vehicles with some Assaulty Termies waiting for CC.

I am the kinda ork that takes his own washing machine apart, puts new bearings in it, then puts it back together, and it still works.

Well, that's disappointing, I really wanted a Battleforged DW army, but I do appreciate the list suggestion. It's something I'll definitely try out

Viable in casual pickup games? Why not.

Viable in competitive play? Definitely not.

Terminators are still, sadly, quite overpriced. They need either a major point reduction or some mix of two wounds, four shot stormbolters, feel no pain, or the ability to assault after deepstrike to be considered "good."

The issue on them is simple math. They do not benefit that much from good luck, as they are usually obliterating units in close combat (if they ever get there), or conversely, rolling too few dice to matter. However, a bit of bad luck is devastating. When you pick up five dice for armor saves and roll three ones, you are losing a substantial points investment. These days, if you even get to roll the 2+ armor save at all, you are likely rolling a ton of them thanks to the high rate of fire armies can put out.

Long story short--termies are still a no-go in competitive play.

I won about 1/5 games with my old Deathwing force and that was back when they were still troop choices! Now I honestly don't know what to do with all my terminators! I'm pretty sure I'll just go the way of the Demi company. But if you want a fun low count formation for apoc. The redemption force has some pretty badass rules the apoc book though not the nerf to the face one they have in the codex

I love terminators, I really do, but they just aren't that impressive in the overall scheme of things. 1 hvy weapon per 5, so the overall output of shots, is disappointing (make the SB salvo 2/4 or something so terms would really benefit from it). In close combat, 2 swings per terminators that go last aren't great, but they can at least hurt something when they do hit. You just want more for 40pts a model.

at least with Deathwing you can throw in a hammer/shield or 2 up front to tank some AP2 wounds, but you're working for every little gimmick you can take. And the 40K battlefield is absolutely unforgiving.

I guess if you have to do it, every little thing helps, so..

a command sqd for sure (even though it's only 5 models). 5pts for an apothecary for FNP. Halberd of caliban is a great weapon (if you get to use it). 1 hammernator up front to tank wounds.
other sqds take 1 hvy weapon, 1 chainfist, 1 hammernator (on the sergeant..to make him pay for bringing a powersword to the party)

Sadly I can't see myself fielding termies very often. If I do it'll be termie librarian + 1 unit of deathwing knights + 1 command squad, in the formation that's designed to work with Ravenwing. Regular deathwing termies just don't cut it, and even the knights and command squad are probably sub-optimal, competitively speaking. They could work if used with finesse though.

Side note, the new Age of Sigmar models look almost perfect to be Thunderhammer terminators.

The new codex doesn't let you field an all-DW force, i.e. with termies as troops? Then I cynically predict that in a few months there'll be an overpriced expansion book which includes one formation that lets you do exactly that.

I got trashed beyond belief with a belial deathwing force recently. 1500 points, and I barely dented my CSM opponents...

Too few attacks, too few models, too little dakka and most of them striking at I1 anyway makes them too weak.

Its not viable apart from a fun list in pick up games...

Everyone and their grandmother has 5-20 terminators. GW knows that to give them good rules means less sales for the new hot model, so sadly we will never see good terminators again unless they stop releasing them in the starter set and also makes the model so different that players feel they have to buy it.

Let the galaxy burn.

Not true. Using the DW Strike Force, all you need to do is run some DW Dreadnoughts in Drop Pods. They come in T1, negating the null-deployment auto-lose. You can't run an all-Terminator force, however. Kinda funny, since Blood Angels can do it without issue.
