I'm in the middle of trying to 3d print some epic designs I've made and a thought occurred, is this actually allowed, I have now intentions of selling them just handing them out to my mates for mini 30k games.

Thoughts?

I don't see why not. I think the big problems come along when you make a certain product at home and market it as the real thing and make money off of it. Plus the only way you can get epic models is through the 2nd hand market.

And honestly, if you keep it between you and friends, who would know anyways?

Do whatever you want, just don't market it and try to make $$$

You should however post the models so we can see here!

Plus really you can print it and call it something else, like "Future basic marine" or whatever

You can get away with a lot on Shapeways, even selling them if you're inclined. In general there is quite a bit of under the table Epic that can be found in the right places. Personally I'd hope anything you're thinking of making you'd put up there for us. Especially if GW never made it in epic scale.

There's no issue with 3D printing GW lookalikes for your own use - especially if GW never finds out.

Just don't start selling them.

Yes, there are some people on Shapeways doing it. However, from my own experience, if you sell models that they feel are infringing on their IP, and your models get popular enough for them to notice you, you will be contacted by GW legal.

There is no under the table Epic. It's all long out of print.

Had a discussion about this with some people at the Troublemaker Games stand "Well given the latest Ad-Mech release blatantly steals most of it's design from the earlier Cybershadows anyway GW doesn't really have a leg to stand on......."

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Selling is iffy, but there's no way you'd get caught just for making them, nor do I imagine there's a lot that could be done if you posted pictures of the results.

I will say that I hope these guys can keep getting away with selling the stuff, would be handy should I ever start Epic!

Don't believe me? It's all in the numbers.

Certainly considering it, issues would be finding opponents and the models (hopefully Shapeways manages to keep selling appropriate stuff...).
Right now though, got my hands full with regular 40k!
And hopefully NetEA can bump up the Dark Angels army list from Experimental status.

There is almost certainly a good up to date list over at Tactical Command. Space Marines or Orks are easily doable on Ebay with Eldar slightly less so. Plenty of proxies about for Guard as well. Tyranids, Tau, Dark Eldar, and Sisters of Battle are far easier now with Troublemaker and Onslaught producing excellent stuff. All in all it's probably the best time to get involved since it was a GW main game in the early nineties!
