What do you do to keep your heroes alive against indirect firing warmachines?
Rock Lobbas and Doom Divers have great range, and with a bully nearby, can really thump heroes turn 1.

LoS still works. Unless you are super unlucky they shouldn't be ganking too many of your characters.

No such animal as Look Out Sir anymore.
And yes, a rock lobber battery is pretty lethal.
That said, it still takes a fair pummeling to bring down someone important - a rock lobba, even with full crew and a bully nearby, still only manages an average of just under half a wounding hit per turn. Yes, you'll probably punch through any saves (but there are plenty of characters with either 3+ saves, 4+ rerollable saves, or other), but it'd still take two or three of them concentrating fire to take out even a mid-level character. By comparison, flinging said rocks at a big block of dudes will kill an average of 2-3 dudes per rock flung, and potentially the same again from battleshock.

How 'bout against the Dwarf warscroll for the artillery battery of three Grudge Throwers with the required Engineer centered in a triangle 1" away from each war machine. Am at work, so can't check out the Rock Lobba here, but I would assume the Dwarven equivalent would be superior, especially with the Engineer buffing them.

Dwarf and orcs have the same base stats, it's the special rules that make the difference.
Grudge Throwers get to pick a grudge, and re-roll to hit and wound against a single model, engineer adds 1 shot.
Rock Lobba get +1 to hit units of 10 or more, and an extra shots on 6's to hit.
Doom divers are 3+ hit and 3+ to wound, and do D6 wounds with a bully. On a miss, they hit a different unit within 10" of the first on a 4+.
Goblin Shaman can give a unit +1 to wound and improve the Rend by 1, which can make the doom diver pretty dangerous.
I'd sat that Dwarfs are better off against a single target thanks to the grudge rule, but you're far more likely to run into 2 rock lobbas and 2 doom divers; they have been good for several additions, and most O&G players will have them.

Thanks for the clarification, Matt.
Based on that info, I would agree that GT's are better at nuking a single model. Heck, with the artillery battery warscroll from the Dwarf list, you could take three GT's all targeting the opponent's general/leader/whatever with the extra shot from the Engineer and be fairly confident of removing said target first turn (6 total shots re-rolling to hit and to-wound with d3 wounds, I believe).

Played a game the other day, my skaven vs tomb kings and during first turn his screaming skull catapult takes aim and quickly turns Ikit Claw into rat paste, so in my turn naturally i returned fire nuking his tomb king & liche priest, then i get a second go on the trot and i finish off his necrotect and his last liche priest and with every thing else that was going on this promptly ended the game. So in conclusion those tactics ended in sad face so we agreed there and then to have a gentlemen's agreement to not shoot war-machines and projectiles at each others characters in the next game which was omg fun and the characters died heroically in battle......seriously you should all try it

A good bench mark is that if the hero has less wounds that the warmachine + crew, it cannot be targeted.
It let's you cripple monsters, but you heroically finish them off in combat... usually dragged down by hordes of goblins.
