Anyone else watching this show on HBO?

Its three episodes into this new season, with a new cast and new mystery. I'm enjoying it so far*, with every member of the main cast tearing it up in my opinion. Rachel Mcadams is having a standout performance, as is Vince Vaughn, in my opinion. Colin Ferrell is also great and Taylor Kitsch's character is startting to get fleshed out and more of his personality, backstory and motivations are coming out(no pun intended, if you've seen episode 3)

*
Spoiler:
First couple minutes of episode 3 had me worried. Soon as I saw Colin's character in the bar, I knew it was a dream scene, the shock of his apparent(ly not) murder completely evaporated and that cliffhanger felt cheap, when at first it was on the level of Ned Starks betrayal and death, which was a huge suprise to folks who didn't read the books. His father's prophetic warning also seemed cheap. The overuse of dream sequences in The Sopranos really soured me on these sorts of concepts. Hope it doesn't show up again. Season 1 had weird visions and stuff too, but it worked in the story because Rust Cohle was jacked up from years of undercover narcotics use.

I felt the scene would have been so much better had Colin's character just abruptly woke up, after laying still like he did when the dream sequence ended. Would've had more impact I think.

The rest of the episode was great, I particularly like Vince Vaughn in this episode, as its so different from what he normally does. He was good last episode too.

E-cigs are not popular on this show!

It's funny...it seems like people bash it everywhere I turn. And while this show (like any other) definitely isn't above criticism, the 'issues' I hear most are that it's slow, and doesn't have MM and WH. But season 1 was also a slow burn. I get that season 1 casts a long shadow, but I'm just left thinking that people need to get over the anthology format and start watching this cast and season for what they are.

McAdams is pretty good, I think. And while Colin Farrell seems to evoke strong reactions from people as an actor, I think he's been solid. If I had to make a criticism, I'd probably say that they might be doubling down a little too much on "f'ed up" with the 3 detectives. McAdams' character might have the darkest backstory of all if things go where I think they will.

I'm still interested and watching, for whatever that's worth.

Really enjoying it so far, very compelling viewing. Slighly concerned the plot this time around is a bit to convoluted, Im unsure as to what exactly the backstory is with all the wheeling n dealing stuff and who wants what but really liking Farrell in it and Vaughn too.

Yeah, I agree on that point.

What do you theorize on McAdams backstory?

Spoiler:
Was her father in a cult or polygamist enclave or some such, and suffered abuse there? I don't recall the details of her talk with her father and the super douche psychologist, other than she's 2 of 4, still surviving. I was too distracted by the one dudes luxurious mane of hair, and just the creepiness of the psychologist.

Yeah, I figure that's basically it.

Spoiler:
You have the suggestion that children were damaged/came out of that cult f'ed up, her obsession with defending herself, the strange little scene with her watching adult vids on the laptop, and the scene this week implying that she has issues with emotional attachment even as she may have a healthy appetite in other ways. I'm no psychiatrist, but something is going on there. And I almost wonder if it's more complicated/horrible than her simply being abused, as horrible as that already is.

So here's a question.

Spoiler:
IIRC, the showrunner said that the occult would have no role this season. But does it feel that way to you? There seems to be a whole lot of ritualistic stuff going on with the murders, possibly Caspar's parties, the, um...crow suit.

Spoiler:
Had you not just told me that, I'd have continued assuming it was occult in nature. Previews on various sites even said it was, but that was early in development, so I guess its changed. The animal heads mounted on the wall of that "fun" house had me thinking it was something occult as well. I also read too much into the credits sequence, and started seeing symbols in the road designs and such, looking for clues, as what I was led to believe about the season had that there is an occult link to the design or some such. But I guess not

Well, for all we know, it could be another "Cumberbatch isn't Khan" moment.
