The best thing about KoW is, there is so little cost in trying it. I mean, you already have the models which will work fine as they are. And pretty soon you will also have the rules for free:

Paizo had a better position. It was already producing content for existing customers in a currently profitable market that WotC/Hasbro left. Mantic has had to invent itself from the ground up in one market where it faces a very steep challenge (Warpath) and another that is fairly stagnant (KoW). Fortunately, Mantic is small enough to get more out of less. If it wasn't for smaller miniatures companies like Mantic, we would have so much less choice across this hobby.

They don't have the back and forth employeement either; not really the point. Paizo is a shadow demon WotC summoned, but can't send away. Yet the Paizo demon doesn't want to be seen as a shadow.

I silently cheer for the up and coming, but the money, and lack of, does the real talking. So I speak what I know to be true. It'll take more than a safe middle ground to pry my money loose. I could offer all the praise and not spend a 1$, what good would that do. Goodwill is valuable; Look a FFG, they can do no wrong. I wonder what kind of rules/game people are really looking for. The simplier the better?

Games like X-Wingu, Descent, Attack Wing and all the countless rest are great and limited at the same time.I wouldn't be interested in playing them anymore often than a slog of Warhammer.

currently if I was into buying orcs again, I would buy mantic. Mantic needs something more, something that say 'Mantic', to keep people interested after the bump. Its wargaming, not nearly as complicated as an RPG, I expect more than the basics. Was Warhammer's sin it forgot to do sit-ups? Why is fat Warhammer so ugly? He/She has a great personallity and likes to game.

What stops you from just using GW fluff? GW has officially abandoned WHFB.

Read the GW fluff and play the Mantic rules using the GW models.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

It is more what stops me from forgetting Mantic exists. Paizo started the PPM minis train up again, so they (Erik Mona) have my gratitude and a buyer.

Never been a better time than now to buy into WHFB, with people dumping the books cheap.

GW did the most part. They fully abandoned their system and give it the "Never happened" treatment.

Making the switch but I have been on the fence for awhile. There are certain things I could not stand about 8th edition... Cannons, magic to powerful, special rule after special rule, slow game play, random everything, ect ect. I pre ordered the KoW2 rulebook and I am looking forward to my first game in the next few months.

For my local area we had problems with, run amuck monsterious Infantry and monsterious Cavalry. Personally, I had no problems as vampire counts, I played the long game of attrition, but some armies just didn't have the tools to deal with it or players couldn't afford to update the armies. MI and MC was killing the game for many young players who only get new stuff on b-days and Christmas.

I could see how they younger players would have a hard time keeping up with the Arms race. plus the cost of just building a army was just plain crazy. Thankfully I picked up a Skaven army for cheap off eBay a few years ago.

Use your WHFB fluff? There's no reason not to set your games in the Old World, and soon "not-WHFB" official lists will exist for every former army anyway. :-)

Temptation is high, I'll give you KoW players that. I also have to applaud Mantic for their business acumen (or blind luck) for re-releasing KoW right when there's a large number of ticked-off mass fantasy battle players. Having the army lists together in one rulebook is also a big turn-on (that's really not the right phrase, is it?) for me, as someone with three fantasy armies.

One question though: will the rules differ between the free download version and the rulebook? Is the download version a "simple" version?

The only difference between the full and free version in first edition was that the free version had limited army and magic item lists. I thinkcampaign rules were onlyin thefull versionas well. So you needed to buy the full version eventually, but the rules were exactly the same.

I like ranks and flanks fantasy, didn't horribly care for the direction WFB went. I got into KoW, and I want mroe players so I can play more games.

Now, GW has gotten out of regimental combat games, and I think it's time we remind the WFB players left that there's a game they can play with the models they have, that involves square bases ranked up.

The great part is we use to do it for GW, it is one of the reasons GW is so big. Players pimping the hell out of it, now all that energy is pushing other games. GW is just making it even easier now. So I guess I should say thank you GW.

BUY MALIFAUX NAO!!!

That's missing the point. Malifaux is a vastly different game. KoW is the ideal alternative because it uses your old WHFB miniatures and follows similar rules / simulates large fantasy battles.

Frostgrave is out in a couple of weeks. A fantasy skirmish game designed for campaigns where you can use your old minis.

More of a Mordheim alternative, yes, but I'm happy to suggest it here...AoS wants to cover both skirmish and mass battle, after all.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

Basically same models as WHFB. I haven't played a game yet, but want to give that a shot as well.

Hmmm, that's good to know. I can at least try out the free rules and not feel like I'm missing out on anything, and hence better make up my mind.

Why would I switch to an inferior miniature looking game when I love 8th and can continue to play for years with real whfb models and continue using almost any editon of warhammer fantasy ? it's the same reason I won't switch to generic crappy sci fi games by other companies, the minis suck sure the rules might be ok but it's a huge yawn fest, can just house rule 40k or pick an edition that is loved.

If other people love KOW hey great just as other people love warmachine etc, I love real fantasy battle and will stick to that long after gw is dead just like I will continue to play blood bowl and battlefleet gothic.

Warhammer fantasy is NOT dead and as long as players exist who support it and play it will exist, just like epic will exist and mordheim and many non gw games, it's this mindset where omg the new rules came out we gotta go out buy them or nobody will play us anymore the world is over is why gw has released this sh-it in the first place, because THEY think its what everyone will do and many of us are doing the exact opposite and it is no reason to switch to another game.

The only way I would ever switch to one of these other indy companies is if one day ( and it could happen sure ) if they come out with something that makes me feel the same as I do towards the warhammer world or 40k universe and I can honestly say there has yet to be anyone and this is some 30 odd years now. We are not their market we are the vets and there is not enough of us to sway them nor do they care or will they ever care.

The only way GW will ever change is by us the community refusing to migrate or take their crap and embrace it, and since wf players never were a major enough target market they disrespected us and now it's our turn to disrespect them and continue to play what we loved and enjoyed since the start, sure little timmy will buy aos bubble hammer sure 40k players will buy up lots on ebay and use them great for those people, we will continue what we love and if gw does not get our money they will get it from timmy and his folks.
