I have an ultramarines (well successor) and night lords 40k force and usually play points games of about 2k, if in a purely fun game would anyone have a problem with me running a primarch (and it's rules) in the respective armies? I personally wouldn't have a problem playing against it as anyone who wants to endeavour to use as much of the models in their collections as they can is cool with me but am curious as to the wider player opinion?

I personally dont have a problem with it.

me and my friend do it often, his time traveling Loyalist Emperors Children play as 40k marines with Fulgrim while my Salamanders use Vulkan, we just use the excuse that "the Sallies found all the relics" and people understand.

40k:
Salamanders - 3500 points
Inquisition - 500
30k:
Salamanders - 4000
Imperial Militia - 1500

No problem here. Even though the relevant Primarchs for your armies are either dead or practically dead, in a friendly game I wouldn't care too much. Who's to say that my army didn't fall through a Warpstorm into the face of the Night Lords in the 31st millennium?

See, you're trying to use people logic. DM uses Mandelogic, which we've established has 2+2=quack. - Aerethan

I should really paint some of my models instead of browsing forums.

Yeah. Primarch's are in general pretty tame compared to stuff in the core rules.

I always just bring a knight and offer to swap him for that if they complain about OP forgeworld stuff.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

And yet, plenty of people will see that choice being pretty much equivalent of choosing between cancer and leprosy. I do like to field a knight or maybe two and might have to get me a mini of The Lion when it is released one day.

I've noticed that all my friends 30k armies invariably have some sort of mechanism to allow them to travel through time in the warp.

I've played 40k armies against 30k armies with a Primarch quite a few times. Never played against a 40k army with a Primarch though, but I'd have no problem with it. If your opponent does have a problem with the fluff of it all, you could invent a similar time travel explanation, or just tell your opponent its a super-duper "modern" Space Marine badass.

If your opponent has a problem with the rules of it all, on the other hand, just don't play the Primarch against that opponent.

If I was asked ahead of time about it for a friendly game, sure. If someone in a pickup game started pulling out a C:SM army and then dropped a Primarch in the middle of it during deployment, I would say no, use the Legion army list.

As long as you know what you're getting into and can have the chance to bring something equal, then it's ok. Otherwise "surprise Primarch" rarely goes over well.
