Hello, i was looking at the new AoS rules and heard that there are no points limits and that you can bring whatever the hell you want. Well, if that's the case, then how exactly would you do a fair army list, why don't you just bring 10 nagash's and a massive army to go up against 10 empire halberdiers and an empire captain. I just dont get how this could be fun and i think, with the lack of restrictions, it takes away the fun and potential for fun tournaments.

Try and adopt a player friendly stance is all you can really do.
Go back to basics, pick a HQ, a few core troops and some more fun things - like a big monster or something.
Chances are after X games you will come up against 10 bloodthirsters but you then simply avoid that player there after.
And before this one devolves into "you shouldnt have to", thats the way things are. You can either rage against it or find some players of a similar fun mindset to battle against.

You don't build lists ahead of time.
Again.
You don't build lists ahead of time.
Again.
You don't build lists ahead of time.
Seriously. This is what's causing 99% of the complaints. Don't bother trying to make a 'fair list' ahead of time. Just play the rules as they're written. Show up with a variety of units you think might be useful. Roll off. The winner deploys a unit. His opponent then gets to deploy a unit... but with the advantage that he already knows part of what he's facing. They then keep going until one person is done. The other player can keep putting more models down if he wants, but he seriously leaves himself open to a sudden death objective.
The rules essentially let both players custom tailor their armies DURING deployment.
Stop trying to build a fixed list ahead of time and you'll be fine.
Also... what stops you from bringing 10 Nagash models and a massive army to fight some Halberdiers and a Captain? I'm assuming you know what sportsmanship is already, but don't care, so I'll give you a different answer. Continued availability of opponents? Plus, he only has to kill a single one of your models (probably a Nagash) to win the game and claim a Major Victory. That'll be hard to do, but not impossible. Realistically speaking though, this game will never happen because you'll come off as a colossal donkey cave and I doubt the game would ever start.
I play 40k primarily. Your question is similar to asking "what's to prevent me from bringing 2000 points of Unbound Knight Titans to fight my opponent's 2000 points of grots?" Same answer... you won't enjoy it and no one will ever play with you again.

Don't build a list ahead of time.
The only down side is that you can bring the models you want to play with, or you can just bring your entire collection. This is not practical for say, a Skaven player like me, that has over 600 Skaven infantry before you add in hero's, war machines, monsters, etc. unless you have some kind of efficient way to transport it I guess.
Don't build a list ahead of time.
You can, however, decide that you really want to play with this unit or that unit, or that hero, and just deploy models onto the table in response to your opponent. You should, however, really know what your warscrolls do for your army, and the synergies that you get. For example, you have a Wizard that only knows a couple spells. However, after looking at a couple units, they grant a summoning spell to your Wizard. Further, when you take this other unit, you can get a reroll on your cast, or it grants you the ability to cast more than one spell a turn. This kind of synergy has been all put unheard of in Fantasy. Synergy is when you look at two things, and by themselves, they are OK. When you combine them, they become better then by themselves. Yeah, it was there in Fantasy before, but few and far between, and was more a "gimmick" then a viable strategy or tactic. As far as I can tell, every army has this kind of synergy in AoS.
Probably the best thing you can do before a game is look at your warscrolls, and pick 1 or 2 synergistic combo's and make those the core of your army, and then just deploy around what your opponent puts on the table.

I have to agree with the comments above. Don't try and make an army list beforehand.
You're forced, in a sense, to have a variety of units / models at your disposal when deploying, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
IMO players need to start communicating with one another when deploying to better establish and understand the social contract. For example if we're deploying, I stop putting models on the table, but you keep going and going and going... I'm going to outright tell you that you're being ridiculous and ask that you remove some models to make the game more enjoyable. Should you refuse, I pack up my stuff and I never play you ever again.
