Hi guys,
didn't play for almost a year due to job-related lack of time :(
But now everything is getting better and I'm eager to have some games once again. However I noticed that a lot of Codices have been updated. Could someone tell me if my following assessment is right?
- Eldar got the new Craftworld Codex and one for Harlequins. So if I want to play my Ulthwé army as well as my age old Harlies I need both books, right?
- Necrons got a new codex, rendering the old one obsolete.
- Imperial Knights got a new codex, replacing the old one (not very much text in it anyways...)
- CSM don't have a new codex so far
- Chaos Daemons have a new Codex for Khorne, but for all other Gods the rules from the last CD Codex are still valid?
I don't wanna buy sth I do not need and I wouldn't want to not buy something I need to play all my old stuff.
Thanks and best regards

For the Eldar question - if you don't field Serpent Spam or demon summoning, I'd bet most metas would be fine with you still using the 6e book. Perhaps even the 7e CWE book using the 6e CWE versions of Harlequins.
That said, yes, officially you need the Harlie book to field Harlies. And there are very tight restrictions of what you can fieldfield
(Tl:dr version, you either have a Troop with both Shadow Seer and DJ permenantly attached, or you need both the new Voidweaver *and* a unit of star weavers...)

Harlies fell out of the recent Eldar codex, so that's 2 books to use both.
The Harlies book is formation-based, and unit listings aren't enough to use them :( But, they are ideal suited for use as allies, and even have their own allies matrix.
If Black Library has the books at a good price in ebook or ibook form, look at doing that, depending on what gear you have. Just print off the pages you need, maybe.

Note - Harlies can't be taken as an Allied Detatchment. As a formation as allies is almost the same thing (just a lot more restrictive).

Thanks for the info so far. I'll buy the books since I'm just that collector type who likes to have a meter of book shelf with nice hardcover books.
I'm clear on Eldar now, but can anyone help with CSM, Daemons or IK?

IIRC (and I don't have either of them), the new IK book is the same as the 'old' IK book, with the addition of 3 variants of the newer model.
That makes 5 variants of the 2 kits, but has formations in it.

CSM still don't have a new 'dex and now that DA have gotten an update, they are now officially the worst army that is still "supported" by GW.
Codex: Daemons is still valid. Codex: Khorne Daemonkin is a new standalone army that mixes khornate CSM and khorne daemons into 1 new army. You can even ally khorne units from the daemons book to the daemonkin book. Note that many people got their panties in a twist because kharn wasn't in the daemonkin book. Be aware that 95% of the units in the book are a simply copy paste job from the CSM and daemons codecies, with some units gaining the daemon of/mark of khorne for free or 5 points. Overcosted units are still overcosted (possessed, warp talons etc), good units are still good (heldrake, soul grinder), but you have a Blood tithe table (gives all your guys buffs or creates units) instead of warpstorm (which is actually a step up), you've lost the grimoure and your formations are generally worse than everyone elses in typical chaos fashion.
Daemons and Daemonkin also have access to 2 new types of blood thirster, though you'll need to backorder a white dwarf for the daemons stats if you don't already own a daemonkin codex.

The new IK 'dex makes all of them lords of war, adds 3 new varients of knight, has a modified warlord trait table, has some formations and allows you to take relics and some additional weapons, but generally behaves quite similarly to the previous dex + errata. Except for the formation that gives you objective secured, that can be a game changer. A large amount of the heraldry book has been rolled into the new codex, ya know, just in case you needed to feel like more of a chump for picking them up previously.

Thanks for the explanations, I think I'm up to date now. In that case I won't need the Khorne Codex, I never played much Khorne, anyway. Also I guess for starters I don't need the Harlequin Codex, it's probably better to have a few games with the Craftworld codex and then see how it would build up on that.
And yes, sumi808, after this I think so, too; I won't need any new models so far. After all there has to be an advantage to play since 20 years. On the other hand you can never have too many models
