I and at least one of my friends have decided that, unless 8th Edition blows the current rules out of the water, we're just gonna stick to 7th Edition.
Reason being, aside from price, that for us 7E has been the most balanced edition (even with the amazeballs amount of power creep and lack of codex internal balance), and we're kinda enjoying many of the rules.
Do you fellow Dakkanaughts have any plans beyond "buy next ruleset, hope for less screwing"?

If I can scrape together a gaming group/club, I'll just take 5th as a base, and add/modify everything.
If not, I'll be stuck trying to find games either at the GW by pretending my models are indeed legitimate GW figures, just that they're so old school no one would know any different, or by searching through craigslist like a desperate gaming virgin.

Personally, I have copies of every edition on my bookshelf, and I'm generally willing to play with any codex I possess from the corresponding time period (though playing tau in RT will likely be entertaining). As I rarely play competitively anymore, i'm generally more willing to engage in such things as long as my opponent is willing to let me houserule some things that didn't exist in those previous times.

I for one like 7th edition, and I hope 8th will be even more streamlined. If not, I'll probably still play 8th, since I feel the need to play an "ongoing" or existing game.

For me, basically as soon as a new edition hits, the older ceases to exist. Even more so after the first dex for that edition hits the shelves.
I got back into the game at 5fth, and I think the game rules have gotten better over time. 7th has a lot of nice things in theory. I think it's one of the fluffiest most cinematic (in a good way) edition since third. (haven't played before). I don't think it's bloated at all.
But it wouldn't be GW if they didn't take a good concept and screw it up royally. I utterly hate random warlord traits and psychic powers for one. And then there is ofc the rampant power creep. I actually like what they did for the most part, they're super fluffy. But they went way over board on some things. And those net exclusive formations can go die in a fire.
So no. Get next ruleset and pray for the best it is. Unless it gets sigmarized that is. In which case it's 7th if they finish all the dexes for 7th or bust.

7th is all I know.
Honestly I AM truly worried about 40k getting AoS'd... If that does happen I suppose my only option is house-ruling around 7th.
But as long as 8th isn't AoS-style crap, I'll be down with moving on to it! Who knows, it could be a legit improvement.

My gaming group decided to stop buying new 40k rules and new codices after the last softback-to-hardback update was made. I'm not sure what I'll do when 8th or a new codex for one of my armies comes out, since I rarely play outside my gaming group.
To be honest, last new army I started was a HH army, and part of the reason why is because I wouldn't hjave to worry so much about rules going out of date.

If 8th is Sigmary, I'll probably make the hard move over to Warpath. If Warpath sucks, I'll probably stop Sci-Fi gaming until something else fills the 40k niche.

I will stick with 7th as long as my LGS don't make the switch to 8th. If the rules from 8th are really bad, I don't expect them to switch anytime soon.
As for games with friend at my place, I will probably stick with 7th until we all get the new book from 8th.
ps: As mention above me, if the rule are like Age of sigmar, I'm hard switching to a new game, possibly Infinity. (i've been reading the rule and reading about each faction, and everything seem really sweet)

What would you really say is the main differences between 3rd and 7th edition that lessens the game?
To me they are quite similar, and every version since 3rd has been more like v3.1 and v3.2

I almost exclusively play AoS now, and I love the system. I'm hoping the competitive ruleset that is supposed to be coming will push it over the edge and it takes flight. I love my daemons but I don't care for the 40k madness now.

GW will never get another dime of my money. I can't stand what the company has become. As such, I've back peddled to 4th and am immensely enjoying playing with my son. There isn't much of a gaming community around here, so I can pretty much do what I like.

They are night and day man. First of all the game was ALOT simpler in 3rd. And the armies balanced for the most part. Even the dirty tricks like rhino rush had counters in about every army.
You didn't have stupid like buying buildings like the Aegis, the Run rule, 80 different special rules. No stupid overwatch, no Hull Point system, you had to have opponent consent and extra x number of points to even SEE special characters on the board. The assault phase was quirky with sweeping advance but I loved it. No random 'warlord traits' either. In fact no random like rolling distance for assault, which was stupid in fantasy it is equally stupid in 40k. And I could go on.

7th was horrible for me from day one. Even house ruled it is not fun at all for my army. If 8th would changed that, it would be nice, if not then am just going to drop the game.

Haven't really played any 40k the last 2-3 years so I don't mind if 8th ed turns out to be as bad or worse than 7th. I'm however considering doing a couple of 15mm 40k armies and use 4th or 5th ed rules. Or maybe 2nd ed with 28mm miniatures.

For a number of our club - 7th edition was a retrograde step and they have either stopped or limited themselves to playing our own 6.5 edition. The huge disparity in produced Codex did not help - not the increasingly sparse non rules content. The only ones that have persevered with 7th tend to attend local tournaments.
If 8th / AOS 40k comes out - we will look at them - decide if they are better, worse or the same and make an informed decision what to use / discard / rules system to use.

This is kind of a what happened here too. Technicly its 7th, but we have a totaly different system for mealstorm mission draw and discard. Faction objectives are banned, because how easy it is to grind points with smaller decks. No magical buildings or ruins in our games and we play with either ally or second CAD to limit some of the stupidity.

I play IG too. Maybe it's just my meta, but the power differences between codexes seemed to shrink. Maybe it's just that we do Fluff > Army.
That said, my friend's Bro is getting back into 40k (left after 5th) buy getting 5 IK. He has 1 so far. When he's done, we're all screwed.
We're staying in 7th mainly because we can fully do our "Fluff First" thing - having a Baneblade turn up when an IG panzer battalion is getting beat up fits the bill perfectly.
We also tend to ignore a lot of mission objectives - Maelstrom can feth right off (My movement speed is 6" per turn) and we replaced Relic with Kill Points, psychic stuff hasn't been used since early 6th, and none of us can be bothered to chase after the flavour of the month.

Already stopped at 6th. Starting to make a list of items to house rule and fix. We've already added daemonology in as an available psychic power group. Also allowing folks to buy and use the 7th edition codex if they like, especially if their 6th edition codex was lame, like the DA book was. We have self imposed power control in our meta, so the stupid free excess gear from some of the detachments is not a problem for us. 7th Eldar codex is not in our group as the only person with an eldar army I first didn't want my small ghost warriors army to no longer be a valid army, and second didn't want said army to become and army full of D-Weapon spam. This primarily why I don't worry much about GW giving 40k the AoS treatment, since I am already not really buying everything from them anymore.
With a controlled group of players you can have a much better and more consistent experience with whichever version of the ruleset you use because it takes out the 'getting stuck playing the random jerk' aspect of the game while playing at the local store for pickup games. Whatever works for you really. I love Epic, Bloodbowl and Necromunda primarily because GW isn't mucking with them anymore and make paradigm altering changes to the game while we are still trying to play it.

Playing a dead and unsupported ruleset is extremely trying, in my opinion and experience. I think a lot of die hards will tire of it and move on to the latest and greatest. Otherwise you lose the sense of community, the ability to pick up and play, a chance to buy new models and have stats available, etc.

Speaking of ceasing purchases from GW - I'm getting there. It'll probably be quite a while before I finish everything on the list, but I no longer buy direct from GW - either I go to another online seller, or I use eBay. My final purchase from GW will likely be the 7E IG Codex, after getting some more marines from Element Games.
Actually looking forward to it. I'll have a reasonably capable IG force, a reasonably capable BT force, and a purty cool looking Hellhammer.
