Police investigate wood chipper fatality accident.
Police investigate wood chipper fatality accident
Thomas Geyer
Davenport police blocked the 2200 block of East 32nd Street on Wednesday after a worker with a local tree company was killed in an accident involving a wood chipper.
5 hours ago • By Thomas Geyer(8) Comments
A worker with a local tree company died Wednesday after being pulled into a wood-chipping machine, Davenport police said.
The victim's name is not being released until family is notified, police said.
Davenport Police Capt. Brent Biggs said police and firefighters were sent to 2246 E. 32nd St. at 3:04 p.m. regarding a worker injured by a wood chipper.
Upon arrival, police determined that the person had died, and no foul play is suspected, Biggs said.
The investigation is being conducted by the Davenport Police Department and the Scott County Coroner's Office.
I'm not too familiar with how woodchippers work. Isn't there some way to prevent dudes from falling into them? Cause, seems like... maybe there should be?
Also, now I kind of want to watch Fargo.

It depends on if it was a top loading or a side loading chipper.
With a side loading one, its difficult to get sucked in if you weren't pushed OR you got caught on the wood you were feeding it. You can't really just fall in, though once you are snagged you are getting sucked in. They are designed to suck stuff in.
A top loading one is a little more dangerous, although these are usually smaller ones too.
Anything which stopped a person from falling into one would also prevent the chipper from functioning. Really they are just insanely dangerous pieces of equipment and not much can be done to prevent that other than be EXTREMELY careful.

If it be a tree company then its probably the big side loading one.
Man what a way to go.

The problem being that you still need to be able to insert the large things that wood chippers are meant to chip.

I don't know the mechanics, but there is a way to make rotary saws which can still cut wood but cease rotation instantaneously if flesh touches them. (The promo video when they came out was really cool.) I wonder if chippers could be built the same way?

It's good of the police to not be giving out the poor bloke's name before his family find out - the media is insane these days, it's hard to believe this could be released as a news item before the person's family know. It's like gossiping gone mad.

The Woman who was killed by the escalator was Chinese, although in that case it was due to extremely shoddy maintenance rather than craftsmanship.

Pffff, everyone knows that a Chinese woodchipper would have jammed after just his arm. That it got the "rest" of him shows that this wood chipper was American made

The way to prevent this is simple seatbelt harnass safety mechanism. Any item of clothing snagged on the wood will simply rip, while a durable, thick cord/rope attached to a harnass would tighten instantly as a seatbelt does. Thus, any sudden movement in the direction of the chipper would cause it to snag and your overalls to simply rip and leave you standing there with wet and dirty undies.
