Hey guys, I've picked a colour scheme for my DIY chapter of marines and I'm pretty happy with it but something about it doesn't sit right. I love the monochrome with a splash of red/orange but maybe it's too much like Black Templars or the dull white helmets look off? What do you guys think?

Cloth (things like tabards) will also be red and sergeants have red helmets.

I think this scheme is lovely, and the reason it looks a little off is because the image has no edge highlights

If you had a strong hot red highlight on the reds and a thin white edge highlight on the light greys, this would really, really pop!

It's a great scheme, I think you should experiment a little on a test fig, but an edge highlight would bring this up a level for sure.

Thanks heaps dude! I definitely will try it on a test model and I'll post it up later

I think the problem you have with your colour scheme could be that it looks like you messed up the lighting because you have multiple greys (and whites/blacks) on one miniature and it implies a bit like you tried to paint a spotlight on the top part of your miniature.

My tip would be to stick with one grey (if you highlight and shade it all then multiple shades of grey will end up looking even more confusin where one part's highlight could look like the basecoat of another part) probably something medium-ish to not look too much like the Black Templars (or you might as well just paint it black). And on top of that colour the orange/red should also cover much better so you could expand that a bit beyond just an arm if you want. You could create a half/half, a quartered scheme, or just paint some parts of the arms and legs (from the hands and feet up to elbows and knees?) orange while leaving the rest of the miniature in grey.

That way you could even paint the weapons grey and they would pop out against the orange arms/hands.
