Goodbye wood Elves.
Anyone else notice the hijinx ensuing?
Brand new Sigmarines! Whoo hoo!
...cough cough, oh by the way we started a new Elf line! Sorry Dragonlance.
Oh by the way, this is the same line we had a big release for not too long ago, and also they are good bad guys now, not bad good guys.
Shut up idiot, you can still play oldfarthammer in the corner with your lame generic forest elfs, but if you want a treeman or dryads you have to buy our totally worth it, new kit.
But I wanna play generic bad good guy elfs!
Not anymore ya don't! The Mini Makers have spoken!
Not only do we not do market research, we can't even be bothered to check and make sure our rebranding isn't a blatant ripoff of something else...
Rant off.
Good morning Dakka!
So how about the new Wood Elf line? I gotta say they look a lot more inspired than the siggies. Not sure what is different about the new stuff but I have a sneaking suspicion that it's not a whole lot...
I'm just excited to see if there are any characters, maybe a Kith Kan-Kan or a sub faction called the Quilanesti... Erm Quilaneth, and they move back to the city and raise griffons to help fight Takhasisisis, Slaanesh's new GF/BF?

You understand that these "new Wood Elves" have been out for awhile right?
And that the Dragonlance Elves you're referring to are the Silvanesti, not Sylvaneth?
And what's more that Wood Elves still exist?
And while we're at it, the Dryads got doubled in size for their boxed set while going up in price something like $6.
And even more while we're at it, that Forest Spirit War Host boxed set?
It's $225 USD for the list price, but just the three Treelords and a box of Dryads get you to $224 USD.
Adding in the Branchwraith puts you at $239, and then you would have paid something like $35 or $36 to add the remaining Dryads to your army.

Its all good. I'm writing a spin off anyways where the protagonist is a Dim Alf named Drizzli Durden. He weilds dual skimitars and has a pet cat named Guenivere.
I think I may have trouble with the name Durden though, I wouldn't want anyone to think I was writing a Fantasy version of fight club...

I agree with most, but the Dryads didn't get doubled in size, they went from 12 to 16.

By the way, "Sylvan" long predates either Games Workshop or Dragonlance -- it is just an English word that can either mean a person or creature that's related to the forest or an adjective to describe something characteristic of forests. It comes from Latin, Sylvanus, so no copyrights there

Wow, way to overdo sarcasm. Nice job.
Also remember that there was Sylvan faction in Heroes of Might and Magic V. And most likely you'll be able to find A GODDAMN BAJILLION of other fantasy names with "Sylv-" as a prefix.
Including silvan elves which, mister, were in Tolkien's books WAY before DRAGONLANCE ripped them off.

they sure do look sexy on their round bases!!!
on a serious note, in my opinion, these are the best looking evil trees on the market...
better than any that GW had made in their previous 30-ish years of Treeman sculpts, and better than anything else going...
the only rival being the Ultraforge Treelady, who has a completely different vibe, but was outstanding enough to be a no-brainer to buy...
a bundle that saves you some money is never a bad thing, either...

Lol, well where are those Wood Elf treeman and dryad kits then, because I can't find them. The new kits are in the preorder section so...
?
New kits are just redone versions? I'm not complaining about the Wood Elf kits, they do look pretty sweet, but aren't they just adding spikes really? I mean come on. It wasn't that long ago that Wood Elfs got new stuff. Can't we have something else first? Wood Elf players are still broke from buying the last batch!
Anyways I just wanted to express my strange feelings when I get an email from the dubs nowadays. Its like "Oh no! GW is doing something, this is going to be silly. I'm going to rant about it online!".
So... I dunno. Suffer the consequences mortals! Shazzam! Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, I think it's awesome that we can come to the AoS forum for a good laugh now.
Anyone wanna compare beards? Who gets the +1?
Points! No points!
Can I put my model on your base so we can melee?

@Jah - do you mean Treeman Ancient / Durthu? This is my favorite GW model of all time. I think the design and construction is exquisite. The face mask is really cool @darkcloak - these are re-releases, with new names (sorta, it's just a faction change from Wood Elves to Sylvaneth) and new white boxes and photos with round bases. The most substantial change is the Dryads going from 12 to 16 models per box without a price increase. Branchwraith is still finecast :( http://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Sylvaneth-Treelord http://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Sylvaneth-Dryads http://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Sylvaneth-Branchwraith I don't see the box set that's in White Dwarf.

Just to clarify, how much did the Dryads change in price?
If your answer isn't in £ please state both before and after prices.
I'm seriously considering starting a Beastman Army but don't dare risk buying the old battalion set and a bunch of round bases. They could increase the box sizes, add round bases and then I'd be out of pocket. Then again they could scrap/change the battalion when they re-release.
My point is that the uncertainty is stifling any desire I have to buy models. Anyone else feeling the same?
I think GW would sell a lot more if people weren't kept in the dark.

Just to be clear, the Wood Elves have not been reclassified as Sylvaneth. ONLY the following units are keyworded as Sylvaneth... Branchwraith Dryads Tree Kin Durthu Treeman Treeman Ancient The elf portion of the old Wood Elves army is keyworded as Wanderers. The High Elves are Highborn. The Dark Elves are Exiles. TLDR -> The old Wood Elves Army Book has split into Wanderers (the elf portion) and Sylvaneth (the tree critters portion). The actual Elves are NOT Sylvaneth.

And I thought this was confusing before!
About the battalion boxes..
Won't we miss those once they are gone? In a short while the only bundle you'll be able to get for under $150 is the starter set. I lamented the coming of the 40k faction bundles because they ditched those battle boxes soon after. Not that the savings were great, but the cost increase puts these bundles out of my price range. It doesn't matter how much of a deal the box set is, I just do not have $300 to spend on toys at any given moment and its not the sort of thing that warrants saving up for. Maybe for some folks this is a non issue but removing that price point from the lineup simply removes my desire to spend. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

It's only confusing if you think in terms of Army Books. If you instead think in terms of Keywords, AoS is extremely straightforward. The only units with the Sylvaneth keyword are the tree critters. The only units with the Wanderer keyword are the actual Elves from the old Wood Elves book. Something like the Great Eagles from the old Wood Elves Army Book simply have the Keywords "Order" and "Great Eagles". Those Eagles aren't tied to the Wanderers or the Sylvaneth at all. They have no particular affiliation other than being creatures of Order. From a fluff perspective, they're just as likely to be seen with Highborn Aelfs as they are with Wanderers.

So... If I want a Durthu for my Wood Elf army I have to buy the Sylvaneth one? Splitting hairs I know, but really why the change? Which PDF do I use for rules for a Wood Elf treeman?
I noticed that several units in the High Elf PDF say to refer to other PDFs for specific rules, is this something akin to that?
Will the Sylvaneth be getting their own PDF or do they just use the wood elf one?
And what about those $150 battle boxes?

If you have the app you can sectionise it by faction for tree related stuff. Every treeman is sylaneth, every dryad, every branch wraith. There is no "wood elf" faction anymore, there are wanderers (the elves), sylaneth (the trees) and beasts all in part of a greater "Order" alliance

So... If I want a Durthu for my Wood Elf army I have to buy the Sylvaneth one? Splitting hairs I know, but really why the change? Which PDF do I use for rules for a Wood Elf treeman?/
I believe they are the same... I do not think the sylvaneth rules in the big book are any different from the ones in the wood aelf army
I noticed that several units in the High Elf PDF say to refer to other PDFs for specific rules, is this something akin to that?
which ones specifically...
Will the Sylvaneth be getting their own PDF or do they just use the wood elf one?
they are included in the rules and in the LONG run there will be no more PDFs, when GW releases a new unit it will have its own warscrolls like the sigmarines have right now, the big PDFS are simply legacy rules for older armies, yes right now you use WOOD elves but when they say release a "wood dragon" or "tree snake" (just an idea) it will get its own warscroll... there will be no more large PDFS, books which focus on scenarios will included all the war scrolls but those are optional.
And what about those $150 battle boxes?
will include warscrolls for all units in the battle boxes.

@bitethythumb
In point form for brevity...
1: So the Sylvaneth are basically a repackage. Okay, nothing to get excited about then. The same kits with new boxes and bases. And the scrolls.
2: Please don't make me look again. I only zapped the file onto my phone for a quick gander and then deleted it. Don't quote me but a lot of the characters on beasts have been amalgated into a couple profiles. Archmages and Mages got melded together I believe. There were a few others that said specifically to refer to another factions PDF, though I believe they were still Elf factions.
3: So where can I get the free warscrolls when the new unit is released?
4: No, I mean where will the $150 bundle be once AoS is fully updated? Lots of these battle boxes in both ranges are disappearing and being replaced by sets closer to $300.
5: I really ought to be painting.

@darkcloak -- for any released model, you can get the rules (warscrolls) on the page for the model. For example, for Judicators, the current new release:
http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Stormcast-Eternals-Judicators
To the right of the Description, there are 3 tabs -- "Rules, Delivery, Returns", and it's a PDF there.
The ones on preorder don't show rules -- though I don't know why, since they'll pop the following Saturday, and it's already in WD so it's hardly a secret...
The Sylvaneth box is $225 USD (ironically, our Canadian version is cheaper, at $210 USD once you do the conversion ). After a discount, it's *close to* the magical $150, but you get a LOT more stuff. 3 treeman ancient (or variants), 32 dyrands, and 1 branchwraith. That's really not shabby.
The Dyrads now come in boxes of 16 instead of 12, and if the rumors page is to be believed, the bloodletters come in boxes of 20 instead of 10. With no price increase. So that's good right?
And me too. I ought to be painting... why am I posting this...
