Morning Dakka Dakka, so I am starting to collect Chaos Daemons for 8th Edition Fantasy and Age of sigmar.

And I had heard how for the most part the models are universally used in both 40k and the Fantasy system.

Now I will make it clear, I do play 40k, I collect Space Marine and Eldar, however I have no knowledge of Daemons or faced them.

And with me collecting the Fantasy version, I thought it would be beneficial to get some knowledge on the 40k Daemons side.

Now I am a player who enjoys fun matches, but at the same time likes to be semi/competitive in games.

So with that in mind.

1. Are Chaos Daemons a good solid army?, can they be competitive?

2. Do Chaos Daemons need to be allied to be competitive or can they be run as a solo army ( I prefer just sticking to solo non allies).

3. What makes them good? What makes them bad?.

4. Are they fun to play?.

5. Do any certain units stand out as must take or good or simply bad?.

And any other general information you can give about Chaos Daemons

(Some tournament information on how they perform there, would be nice, I am looking into entering the tournament scene at some point).

Thank you.

Answers:

1) Yep, they are good. There are some builds I have never seen lose.

2) They are best as a solo army.

3) Fateweaver and the Grimoire make them good. Fleshhounds make them good. Being able to bring 5 monstrous creatures makes them good. Lots of other things make them good.

4) They are fun to play.

5) See above. It's really combinations of units with outstanding saves that make the army what it is.

Daemons are interesting because they do a lot of things very differently to other 40k armies. Theyve got very few vehicles (though soul grinders are great!) and very little shooting. Instead they are psychically strong, and rely on buffing/debuffing/summoning with psychic powers or relics like the grimiore (which gives a 3++ to a friendly unit) or portal glyph (spawns new units of troops). They really shake things up by having army-wide deep striking, which lets them do wacky things with deployment and board control. Even their slowest units can be incredibly useful when teleported into the backfield. They also have an armywide 5++ save, which while it might sound rather low, is incredibly powerful. It makes them probably the most reliably durable army out there (not MOST durable), as they save 33% of absolutely everything. They do not get hard countered by plasma or grav weapons, powerfists or rending, AP means absolutely nothing to them. With some armies relying so heavily on powerful weapons, daemons throw an interesting wrench into the meta by compleatly ignoring their bonuses.
