In terms of security, how close could you get to the imperial palace and to the emperor himself without meeting resistance?
I'm not expecting to be able to hop up on Big E's lap and snap a selfie, but could I make it to the front door?
Where is it located? In a city or on a barren plains? Could I touch the walls without being shot?
I know its guarded by custodes, Brides of the Emperor, some imperial fists, and probably some Grey Knights too.
How hard do they duty tho?
Could I slip one a five and they let me in for a sec?
Just asking for a friend.
Sincerely,
Cypher

There are billions of regular people living on Terra. Even menial Adepts of the Administratum live in the Imperial Palace, whose population is in the billions alone.

You can only access the Inner Palace with permission of the Custodes though, and they barely give it to anyone. A few high-ranking Inquisitiors and Tech-Priests who work on the Golden Throne are the only ones who can access the Emperor.

It's specifically said in a rulebook that Arbites patrol the streets of Terra and shoot anyone who stumbles into restricted areas though.

If you were lucky, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the Eternity Gate, which leads into the Inner Palace. You're not getting any close than that.

Shred City.

Every year, many millions of pilgrims from all over the galaxy who have spent their entire lives/fortunes just to get to Terra once show up. It isn't unusual for normal folks to be on the planet but getting 'close' as you say is a different story. The billions who already have the privilege to live on Terra don't even have a chance at getting anywhere near the inner palace.

As mentioned, you could get to the entrance and see the statues of the primarchs, maybe the Eternity gate and whatnot, but only a small minority of authorized officials in the upper echelons of the Imperium could get close. Of those, a further fraction have actual access to him.

Primarch statues, not sure what else lies directly beyond all of this, though. As you can see, there are Custodes even well before you get inside. Act up anywhere, you gonna get your wig split:

On that note, are there any official stories/books that cover day-to-day life in the palace? I've been reading a ton of bolter porn/politically intricate 40K stuff the past year or so and I'm a little burned out on it. I'd love a different flavor of 40K background revolving around Terra if it exists.

Terra in general is no longer self sustaining. They need supplies from pretty much everywhere to keep themselves running.

I'm pretty sure there are pilgrims visiting the holy sites on Terra at all times. You wouldn't be able to actually see the Emperor, but I'd bet the palace has somewhere for pilgrims to get close-ish, and worship etc... Not unlike the Vatican.

Psyk-Out Grenades are made from the dust the Emperor's skin flakes off. Whichever Custodes collects that is likely the closest, and we're talking vitrually touching him.

Its all for a laugh.
I just wanted to know how deep the fluff went regarding the Imperial Palace defenses.
Cypher has a seemingly impossible mission, and I wanted to put myself in his position and pick the Dakka hivemind to see if they could find something on it that I couldn't.
I didn't know anything about the Psyk-Out Grenades.
Besides, speculation is fun.

Do want to point out that (I believe) there are infinite realities in infinite dimensions. the 40k universe exists out there somewhere.
I know it's all a joke, just wanted to put that out there.

Cypher could probably disguise himself as a Tech-Priest and gain access to the Emprah, given sufficient time (ie centuries)

Correction. There are theorized to be infinite realities. Theory and fact are not always synonymous.

The closest a person can practically get is to be a suitably potent psyker as to be selected for the Adeptus Astra Telepathica soul-binding - it's been mentioned that a significant number of astropathic candidates are physically brought before the golden throne itself, so you'd get to see the Emperor in person.

Of course, that's the last thing you would see before the soul-binding process destroys your sight and you get shipped off to elsewhere in the galaxy to play living telephone exchange for the rest of your life.

The only book I can think of set on Terra for any significant amount is the William King space wolves book Wolfblade - it covers a group of space wolves detatched as bodyguards to a Navis Nobilite household.

There is a Horus Heresy book, cant remember which, where a Custodes playing the 'Blood Game' came within striking distance of the Emperor.

An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded.

Uhm.. I think the Primarchs, with some necessary notice, could have seen him pretty much whenever they wanted too.. if not them, who else?

Anyway.. when he was alive, did the Emperor made regular public appeareances or something? I haven't read all the book so I constantly wonder how his days on Terra were spent. For how plenty of stuff to do he might have been, it's strange to imagine a leader of his greatness just staying close in the Palace all the time

You'd be probably able to get into the palace, as it covers about all of Asia, but getting within a few hundred kilometers of the Throne is probably going to be a big no. It is guarded by the Adeptus Custodes, who are miles ahead of even the Grey Knights in terms of being superhuman mary sues. And as if that is not enough, the doors in the inner palace are also guarded by Titans.
They only way you'd get in is by being one of the AdMech working on the throne (and I highly doubt they ever leave the inner palace once they are in) or by being a psyker about to be sacrificed or soul-bound.
It'd probably be easier to get into the Black Library than into the Imperial Throne Room.

It's also unclear who actually controls access - some of the fluff for Alicia Dominica has the Custodes having to sneak her into the throne room to speak with the Emperor (but that was the Age of Apostasy).

Man, the Emperor's deceased arse is protected by a Bureaucracy. Don't need no steenkin' sojers.

In other words, it depends entirely on who you are and who you know. Because your Emperor is no longer holding court or taking requests you're much more likely to get close if you're a Techpriest maintaining the Golden Throne or a Custode guarding it than just about anyone else.

Besides, what were you planning to do if you actually got an audience? Ask him to join you in a round of pinochle? He's not exactly a scintillating conversationalist.

The most likely reason for outsiders to get close is probably either a High Lord of Terra seeking inspiration or a high ranking member of the Ecclesiarchy, also seeking inspiration (and the Emperor's Blessing). Either would be shockingly rare.

My two cents.

The Imperial Palace covers what we currently call the Himalayan Mountains.

There's also a pair of Titans in the throne room. Along with a lot of Custodes. Last but not least, as we learn from Kal Jericho, the Emperor is very aware what goes on around his person, and is able to affect change in Realspace via psychic means, such as stopping time.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

The gate itself is actually guarded by two titans as well.
