Thamor - The only primers I know of that you can run through an airbrush are the surface primers from Vallejo. I actually use the black one quite a bit to touch up some models in places where a spray primer has a hard time reaching. For the surface primers, Vallejo has other colours as well - one of which is called German Red Brown. I haven't used it though judging but the picture > http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/blog/2011/01/surface-primer/ it could be close in colour to the Duplicolor can primer. Might be worth a shot.

Should keep in mind the surface primers are not as durable as the primers you get in a spray can. They're acrylic primers and from my experience, don't bond to the metal/resin/plastic surface as well as the sprays. Think it has something to do with the fact they don't use as many of the harsh chems that you find in spray cans but at least they don't stink when you spray them.

Can you think of any of the current VMC, VGC or VMA that would get close enough to your base coat with the Dupli-Colour? Something I can add the Blood Red highlight to.

Just another quick couple of questions if you don't mind, When your giving the red a shadfing with the Opaque Red and Opaque Black in a 50/50 mix do you just mask off the top half of what your shading and do a light spray to the bottom? And would VMC Black Red work for this step?

Thanks migs. You actually don't need a big space for airbrushing, I do it in on my computer desk which is where I also paint. Just need to spend the extra time for setup/teardown which isn't that bad. Definitely look into getting a spot when you've moved into San Fran

Thamor - Not sure about any of the vallejo colour ranges. I barely use their paints as my preference is mostly with P3 and some GW paints. I'm pretty sure there are some online reference pages that will allow you to match colours between all the ranges though. As far as the duplicolour red goes I have no idea what would match it paint wise. I don't have anything in my current paint kit that would match 1:1. Closest would probably be GW Red Gore.

For shading, I never use any masking when applying paint to one single surface for highlights->midtones->shadows. Masking would defeat the purpose of using the airbrush as it allows you to have a gradual colour shift from your highlights to midtones to shadows. I only mask when I want to limit overspray across multiple surface areas (ie. different panels on a tank).

Not a problem - had some things in production that I just finished...check below. Also, Carmine red looks good...should give you good results.

Yup, just make sure you're not too attached to your desk as the overspray will eventually get to the surface. My desk has tons of random paint all over it as well as dried resin spots from when I was experimenting with doing resin casting. Not a good looking desk anymore but works great for my needs.


Been a month since my last real update. Painting time is a lot less these days since I've started graduate school while working my regular full time job. Anyway, I managed to finish off the three tanks I've had sitting around for the past 3 months:


Razorback: Had to redo the servo skull after snapping it off the regular connector wire...the plastic is too weak...ended up using some guitar wire instead.

Gah! awesome as per usual, I sometimes wonder if you tire of hearing positive comments each post! but it's hard when everything you do manages to look so great! I can't even give you any constructive criticism all 3 look excellent Eggy, the burn marks on the assault cannons are great! and the I particularly like the green shade you use for all the lenses it really stands out with the dark red you use for them, all in all, I wish i could shake your hand this army is so cohesive and looks so good!

I see you like your Italian cars, Enzo on the Annhilator, for the Ferrari Enzo, Lambo after Lamborghini, on the predator destructor and Zonda on the Razorback, after the Pagani Zonda.

Nice cars and also your very nice models, the only thing is the guy in the razorback, his face looks a little pale and under detailed compared to the res of the model, is it due to the lighting? All the models are really stunning.

PS how do you do the really nice scriptwork, I am very envious

Good eye dantay! Was wondering if someone would notice. Doing the names was something I had left till the end because I just couldn't figure out good names for them. I watch a lot of Top Gear and eventually figured Italian cars would make the perfect name so I went ahead with it. Since the BA tanks have overcharged engines or something like that it was very fitting

The driver's face is a bit washed out and not due to the photos. I didn't spend too much time on him as I was rushing in the end to finish up.

For the scriptwork my secret is just having a really good brush that holds a fine tip well and making sure I have proper paint loads in the brush. I've been doing all my painting with a Windsor & Newton Series 7 Size 0 brush for the last few months. The brushes last a very long time and holds a tip very well which comes in handy when doing tiny details. In fact, I'd rather have this brush for fine detail than some of the super tiny 10/0 brushes because the bigger brush size will hold paint better than the tiny ones. With a good brush and making sure you don't overload the brush with paint, you can be very precise with paint placement when painting.

Yay another Top Gear fan. The red of the Blood Angels does lend itself well to the car theme too. Many cool red ferraris out there.

Thanks for the tips on the brushes. There is a great art store in Dundee so I shall see what they have.

I have never seen such commitment to awesomeness across a single army. Do you paint other things between your BA models?
Quick question (another one that is): do you add the shade colour after the base colour? I have seen some people prime white, then pre-shade black before adding the base colour to get a similar effect.

Luther - Thanks. I haven't painted any non BA models for over a year now I think. Been slowing collecting some grey knights since they've been released but haven't painted any yet. The witch hunters decal sheet is one of the best decal sheets around

Yes, I shade after I do the primer. I've seen the prime white and "preshade" method...not a fan as it's hard to judge what the final effect will be and correcting any mistakes is difficult as you'd have to repaint the areas white and preshade again and then colour.

That's a good point. What do you use for your shade colour? I use Vallejo model air hull red and mahogany but both are more dark brown than dark red. They need satin varnish before they look as rich and 'deep red' as yours.

LutherMax - I use a 50/50 mix of black/red for shadows for the red areas. Not sure about the Vallejo range as I barely have any of their paints except a few metallics. Varnish is a good way to bring out some of the colour though as you mentioned, I always use gloss on my tanks followed by dull cote. Makes them "pop" a bit more.

Just now following this thread. Not a blood angel fam, simply because i suck at playing them...lol...but it would be damn fun to play the BEAUTIFULLY done army. my god. I wish i could paint tanks like you :( ... Am i correct to assume that alot of this work, especially vehicles, was done with an airbrush? Weathering too? and OSL on lights? Im sure you've answered all this and i apologize for asking only now, but id rather not sift through 25 pages of back posts Im inspired by your work Thanks for that!

Another update, this time with some finished work as well as pics of some work in progress models.

Finished these scouts two days ago and snapped a pic today. Actually like these guys quite a bit...my first models that I painted were sniper scouts 3 years ago so might have to buy another box of sniper scouts and paint them up again.


Next up...some work in progress pics. Here's a Baal Pred box with the following:

I like the chaplains I've got all of the current range of chaplains. Trying to collect all the librarian models too...just missing the one with the power axe. That and Tycho are the only few HQ's left for me to collect from the current range.

Tom - I've actually slowed down from the pace I had this summer. If it wasn't for school I'd have a lot more done by now. I also know you've been slacking, been eagerly waiting an update on that space hulk thread of yours though I guess you've got your hands full at the moment with the upcoming Tom Jr.

I haven't thought much about the successor squad yet. I think I'll probably do a simple 5 man tac squad with a Lamenter, Angels Sanguine, Flesh Tearer, Angels Encarmine and Blood Drinker marine all kited out with some decent weaponry and bionics. Almost sort of a deathwatch squad. Oh yeah, I also need to add Seth to my collection too. Soooo many models to paint.

Wow amazing airbrush and conventional brush work. Can't wait to see your take on Seth and the sort of deathwatch squad sounds amazing!

Quick question, do you use inks or washes or something to 'blackline' the little details – e.g. the little vents on infantry legs and such?
