Hey all,

I got the Chaos half of the Age of Sigmar starter set for a very reasonable £30, and I decided to paint them up. I honestly don't know how often I'll play Age of Sigmar - nor whether I want to buy any more models for Khorne, who is kind of the most boring Chaos God - but I want to paint these guys up anyway. The models are really nice, with good details that are not totally drowning the model (unlike the Lothern Sea Guard from Island of Blood or the Chaos Chosen models from Dark Vengence). I'm a fairly experienced painter (though I've definitely plateaued of late; my techniques have not developed in a while, nor my speed) and I'm hoping to have these guys be a swiftly-painted yet visually pleasing force that will serve as a guest army, as I have friends who will play Age of Sigmar but not buy it. My only theme decision was to have them painted in Indian skin tones (because, why not?) and come from the Shyish themed plane, using mostly the same base colours as my 8e Tomb Kings.

I decided to start work on the Khorgorath - who is nearly finished, and will be the focus of my next update - and one of the Blood Reavers. For the latter, pictured below, I decided to go for a scheme that looks decent, and is swift enough that I can replicate it on the rest of the force. I could definitely have given this guy more complexity - the straps are very samey, and the human heads are barely adequate - but I didn't want to start with something so complex that I'd struggle to replicate it in timely fashion on the other nineteen idiots in his squad.

My main changes on the next couple will be to try and use a bit less bright red - I think that I went a bit overboard on the bracers - and to use a darker shade on the skin. The latter I want to do in order to try giving the muscles a bit more definition. The red, meanwhile, shows my perpetual problem of being heavy-handed with my highlights. I managed to avoid the problem on most of the rest of the model, but the red bracers definitely show it in action.

Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you for the next update, when Stompy McBloodtits will be the focus.

Your title cracked me up!
The model looks great, and I like the choice of skin colour. It occured to me the other day that it's ever so slightly racist (though in reality it's probably laziness) that space marines are always white, so I have made an effort to come up with more varied skin tones. It also seems appropriate that someone who has fallen to the Dark Gods would not keep the skin colour of their birth, whatever that happened to be, and instead have a more 'chaotic' skin colour.

space marines aren't all caucasian

salamanders have a black skin tone, and the raven guard have a greek-esque olive tone to their skin.

otherwise cool stuff, I really enjoy the skin tone as well.

If your stuff is "adequately" painted then my stuff is horrible, i think you painted it quite nicely

Ah yeah, I forgot about those.

however, I would agree that a lot of the guard models and the space marines are very caucasian, but GW being a british company, and them primarily marketing to caucasian companies, it would make sense as to an ignorant lack of colour in skin tones.

Hey all,

Thanks for the comments! The skin was pretty easy to do, actually; just Mournfang Brown, highlighted with Skrag Brown, inked with Agrax Earthshade, then highlighted once more with Skrag. I've got some more Blood Reavers in progress (pic below), so we'll see how this scheme looks on their faces.

Diversity in Warhammer is pretty lacking. I mean, there is not a single female model among the new Age of Sigmar stuff. And if you look at the art, you have to look very hard indeed to find any evidence of the Old World, the Mortal Realms, or the Imperium having any equatorial belts that would make people tan. I guess that it comes down to GW's base market - British middle-class white male teenagers - not really caring enough, so that GW have no particular incentive to change that.

So last night I finished off the Khorgorath. This is a fun model, though his stats are distinctly underwhelming. Sort of a mid-size monster? I mean, he comes in units of up to three, so he can't be all that good by himself.

Apparently my camera cannot handle the majesty of this model, and so the photograph is slightly out of focus. Sorry. The skin is done using the technique used by Duncan Rhodes in the GW Bloodthirster video. This mainly involves drybrushing various colours of red on, before a final highlight.

I probably went a bit overboard on the final red highlight, giving it a slightly electric look, but I think that overall the model looks pretty decent.

I was more ok with painting his little butt-cheeks than I thought I would be. Anyway, the biggest annoyance on this model was the fact that I had to drybrush both the skin and the bones, which meant that I had to spend some time reapplying red around the bones. Why he has random skulls sticking out of his back, I don't know. Still, because I knew that I would have to do that, I held off on applying the final red highlight until the very end, allowing me to see all the other colours before doing that stage.

One nice thing about having painted over 4,000pts of Tomb Kings is that you get very comfortable at quickly painting bones. I could apply my Tamiya Clear Red - which gives a really impressive blood effect to models - over the bones, which would make them look more gory and whatnot, but I think that I kind of prefer it the way it is. The dusty white contrasts nicely with the leathery red.

For my next batch, I've chosen four Blood Reavers (including both of the other command models), and also the Khorne Icon guy (uh, Bloodsecrator?). All that I've done so far is paint Zandri Dust on the skulls and straps. The skulls are drybrushed, so I wanted to do them first, before I applied other colours.

As to the 'adequately painted' part - aside from joking, this army is consciously designed with a reasonably rapid paint scheme. For contrast, this is the laborious scheme that I was using on my High Elves, at least up until the End Times killed my interest:

Thanks for reading, and hopefully I'll have another update soon, with some Blood Reaver goodness!

Thanks man. The Reavers are really lovely models. You can see more examples of the orange scheme over on my now defunct painting blog for that army.

You may want to drybrush over the skin; it could do wonders for its depth.

Looking good Charles. Particularly that large thing with the skulls.

You've got the gold and the bone looking just perfect as usual.

I'd maybe go one little step further with highlighting the skin. Just a few very light touches at the extreme upper edges and corners. Just for a little extra definition, but yeah, looking really good anyway.

Very nice, but I agree with the previous comment that the human flesh could use another highlight.

Great stuff regardless!

So I finally got around to doing some more painting on these blighters. I'm going to let the models do most of the talking, this update, though I will note that I totally ignored suggestions of improving the skin colour. In short, I wanted to have these guys done fast, not necessarily to use the best techniques; but there is nothing stopping me from returning and adding more highlights to the skin, if I want to do so at a later date.

I finished four more Reavers, as well as the Bloodsecrator.

The banner was interesting to paint, but it took forever to carefully highlight the different portions.

Can't leave home without your command figures!

When painting these guys, I was getting really strong flashbacks to painting Ork Boyz. They even work kind of the same in the game!

There is a lot of branding on these guys. I get the impression that I'm going to be really bored of highlighting Khorne's symbol, by the time that I finish the starter set...
