It literally makes no difference on the table unless you bring the Cult Marines. There's no Chapter Tactics for Chaos, so just pick one that tickles your fancy.

Just know the Thousand Sons Marines are very expensive and Chaos doesn't really have much wiggle room on points costs right now. You'll get less of the good stuff the more Thousand Sons you include. But there's no rule saying you must include them in that 'Legion' and can't include the other stuff.

I like thousand sons but I wouldn't touch their codex entry with a 10 feet pole if I wanted to win a game. They're just that bad.
In my meta, I could definitely see Noise marines become so Emperor's children would definitely work for me too.
The other two are just thematic and anything would fit in their army.

You don't have to be happy when you lose, just don't make winning the condition of your happiness.

Thousand Sons for sure, just don't expect to win much... but winning will be all the sweeter. Ahriman is almost an essential pick for a Thousand Sons list. Allied Daemons help too.

It really depends mostly on, a) The models you like/think you'll enjoy painting the most, and b) How true do you want to emulate the background?

For example, with a true Thousand Sons Legion list, you'd essentially be limiting yourself to;
HQ: Ahriman, Daemon Prince, Chaos Lord, Sorcerers
Elites: Terminators, Possessed, Hellbrutes
Troops: Thousand Sons, Cultists
Fast Attack: Warp Talons, Spawn, Heldrake
Heavy: pretty much anything except Havocs
Plus allied Tzeentch Daemons for even more psychic fun!

Meanwhile, going for an Emperor's Children Legion themed list would open up the ability to include most/all of the actual units in the book.

On the other hand, a Legion like the Night Lords would be doable by using the Crimson Slaughter rules + a pair of CAD's and loading up on additional units of Raptors & Bikes, while an Alpha Legion list is probably better off using something like the Ravenguard Chapter Tactics from the Vanilla Marines codex!

Except Ahriman is pretty much the single most "wrong" choice for Thousand Sons. They'll shoot him on sight. He's a renegade running from his legion.

I don't think that this statement about Ahriman had anything to do with fluff, which has no actual impact on gameplay if you so choose.

He still has his own sizable retinue of Rubrics, along with a loyal cabal of Sorcerers. From a purely rules/army comp perspective, his forces could/would look very similar to any other 1kSons warband that's still loyal to Magnus.
The biggest deviation, is that Ahriman's forces are much more likely to include other Tzeentchian renegades and/or mercenary forces from other Legions/warbands.

Of course, using Ahriman's rules doesn't have to mean you're actually using Ahriman himself... You can always use his rules to 'count as' a powerful Thousand Sons sorcerer of your own devising, or perhaps another named sorcerer from within the Legion.

Can you paint lightning bolts? Then Night Lords.

If not, Alpha Legion.
