Pursuant to the 'multiple templates' thread in YMTC:

How do people shoot their deepstriking IG special weapon squads?  Usual config is Demo Charge + 2 flamers.

I tend to throw the demo charge first, hoping for a maximum number of S8 AP2 wounds.  If I use the flamers first, then canny casualty removal by my opponent can make a small scatter attenuate the damage from the demo charge severely.  But often the casualty removal from the demo charge will leave only a couple of models in flamer range, unless the drop lands me 1-2" away from the enemy.

There's also the chance of the demo charge scattering back and killing all my flamers before they fire...if I fire the flamers first, at least I'd get a few kills for sure.

What do you all think?

Also, does anyone take demo charge + 2 meltas in special weapon squads?  It's considerably more expensive, but I find I often scatter to end up 8-12" away from enemy squads, and the meltas mean I usually get one kill.  There's also the chance of an 8-12" instakill of an IC if you land right....

About half the time, I don't even get to use the demo charge due to scattering out of range.  But it's presence usually causes opponents to spend some critical late-game shooting to take out the DC squad.  Flamers make this less expensive.

Thoughts?  Comments?  Random insults?

Random insult:  you wear funny shoes.

I'd say something about your IG dilemna, but I the only thing I know about them is that they can have a lot of freaking lascannons to shoot up my precious dreadnoughts.  Bastards!  Cheesy, lascannon toting bastards of death!

Hey Neil, not that it has mattered in past games, but aren't you supposed to do template weapons first? Which would make your decision easy because you wouldn't actually have that choice.

Hmmm...have to check my rulebook tonight. You may be right. I didn't think that that rule applied ONLY to 'template weapons' that use the flamer template. I've always resolved blast weapons (that use blast or large blast TEMPLATES) first as well, and sequentially (ie removing casualties between placing templates).

I assume that if the rules apply to both flamer-template and blast-template weapons, then there is no requirement to resolve one particular type first - it would be firer's choice.

Ah, who needs to wait to check the rulebook - that's what the guys over on YMTC are for...

I've used one demo & 2 sniper rifles to catch unobservent people, but if you have regular opponents they will catch on fast. Unless your army drops en mass, your squads will seldom last out the turn, so dont worry about expendables. All melta squads are good for anti Defiler actions, but I have problems with my plasma squads melting themselves more then my opponents.

The two best configs I have seen work well is:

Democharge and 2 plasmas. Guaranteed to kill TMC and also 3+ armies. Two units of these bad boys lay the hurt.

Democharge and 2 meltaguns with sharpshooters. Kills high T models and blows tanks up real good. Two units of these work great at busting the nuts of retinues or stray ICs that wander away from protection.

I would never use flamers as that requires you to be way too close for them to all hit anything.

Hmmm...maybe I'll have to try the sharpshooters thing. Could be worth the doctrine point if I go all-infantry and take Heavy Weapon Platoons, as somewhere else to put sharpshooters.

I didn't think that Special Weapons Squads were allowed to take Plasma?!?

Neil you need armour! Infiltrating Lascannon platoons? Expensive. BS 3, terrible. Ordnance, no BS required. Leman Russ, Demolishers, Basilisks, Hellhounds are your best friends. Drop a couple Sentinels, throw those lascannons in squads and kick my ass!

Dood...the plasma squad that all killed themselves (except for the JO) on the drop was my HQ command squad.  They are totally allowed plasma.  It's the Special Weapons squads (the ones with the demo charges) that aren't allowed plasma for some reason.

Last game I was just testing out a Sentinel-heavy list, since my previous try at playing it ran into unforeseen metagaming crap.  Even with deepstrike, the list certainly didn't work well against your marines, I have to say.

I just received a few more tanks, so I should be able to oblige you soon..
