Hello

So I'm debating whether or not to buy some supplement codex for my Chaos army.
I like Khorne and Possessed so Daemonkin would be one I'd want, Black Legion is my army colour so that would make sense, Crimson Slaughter I know nothing about and I have no interest in Daemons.

What do I get from each codex and which of them benefits what unit

Firstly, Daemonkin is a stand alone codex, not a supplement to CSM. If you like possessed, I would probably go for Crimson Slaughter. Possessed are troops and are actually usable. They also all cause Fear (not that great TBH) and have a relic that is basically the only artificer armour chaos can get. Better still, grab yourself a ML3 sorcerer with a spell familiar and the prophet of the voices relic, which makes him a possessed. As a daemon, he can then use Malefic demonology without any penalties and summon in some daemons. No need for Daemon allies.

KDK is pretty great, and has improved possessed (not troop, but better and can be improved by the blood tithe.) Only for hard-core Khorne fans tho. There is almost no shooting.

Crimson slaughter has superior wargear to black legion imo. And free fear.

Halandri

Possessed cause fear regardless of crimson slaughter or not as they are daemons, no?

For me, the biggest attraction to buying the supplements was the background, and to a lesser extent the pictures.

In terms of rules the codexes don't add all that much to the basic codex, unless you are interested in using the bonus scenarios (which, as written you can use in place of the normal missions, without needing special permission from the opponent, though you do need to roll off to be able to use them).

Oh the supplements are also good if you like using planetstrike/city fight expansions too, as I believe they add strategems for these.

Well I'll try find all 3, if anything it's just for fluff

I'm determined to make possessed work, or I might just wait for edition 7 codex and hope Mr Kelly sorts out my 2 favourite units

Crimson Slaughter is a must if you want to run a Lord or Sorcerer with Divination. Also an artifact in there for Dark Apostles which makes them only slightly less excrement.

Daemonkin is standalone, but I kinda consider it a supplement in its own way if you wanna do a Khorne list. In a larger game I had, I ran a Juggerlord from the vanilla codex, a Nurgle Lord from Crimson Slaughter, and Daemonkin using a couple of Blood Thirsters. It was pretty fun.

BTW, I can't wait to run Double-D-thirsters! Man, just thinking about it gets me Khorney.

Indeed - what sort of bastard would want to use their codex?

Black Legion has some nice relics, not as good as the other Codex's but its nice to have some different flavour sometimes.

Crimson Slaughter has access to arguably better Relics, and their warlord traits are all pretty decent for a CC beatstick, and the rare time that Fear actually works (like against Orks) is a fun bonus.

Crimson Slaughter does better Nurgle Lords (Daemonheart and Horns), while Vanilla CSM does better Khorne Lords (Axe of Blind Fury).

I wouldn't touch the Black Legion book. Mandatory VotLW kills it for me. Everything that's usable in that book is fearless anyway and will crump Space Marines with or without Preferred Enemy.

Well I now have the Khorne Daemonkin codex (might be time to start on collection Khorne Daemons) and I'm still on the look out for a Crimson Slaughter and I think I'll "Abaddon" (get it ) the black legion codex
