Hey Dakka, sorry to spam you guys with posts haha

I've been struggling with guard recently. But I've always liked their meta. The idea of a shooty horde army seems cool to me, but unfortunately, guard just kinda suck. Even their tanks aren't the boogeymen they used to be. Guard only see, good if you use the same couple of units - Vets with Meltas and Wyverns. But I'm much more interested in fielding lots of infantry and tanks.

Anyone played any armies similar? I've only really played marines and guardsmen and a bit of Tau. I used to want to play a large army of Tau fire warriors until I found out that sucks and that crisis suits are the only way to go haha.

Cheers guys

You could always wait until the next Guard codex comes either Winter of this year or Spring of 2016, and see what it looks like after that. I'm mainly a Guard player, but I recently finished an Admech army because I love the look, lore, and how the army functions. I'll still be a Guard player at heart though. One these days, stormtroopers will be good.

Hmm.... Sisters have some similarities:

-Units of 5-20, but with BS4, 6++, Bolters and PA
-Ability to spam tank transports (Rhinos, Immolators and Repressors)
-Exorcist as a long range (albeit fickle) tank
-0-4 Priests with War Hymns (plus Jacobus for a fifth in HQ)
-Ability to spam melta or flamers in a scouting, vehicle borne unit (Dominions)
-Acts of Faith boosting abilities (mostly single use, kinda like Orders system)
-HQ that gets back up (St Celestine)

They do, however, lack a lot of the long range shooting of IG, they have only one flyer (from FW), and of course the minis themselves are metal and quite pricey to say the least.

Waaa? Is there a new guard dex on the horizon?

If there is a new Guard dex due soon I may just sit tight and wait for that and in the mean time, build some lists using my newly discovered (yet really old) Paskisher. I only just noticed he gives dem BS4 20 shots rending... That sounds quite gloriously fantastic.

I do not believe there are any reliable rumours of a Guard codex, though it can be deduced they would more than likely get one next year.

Sisters are nothing like Guard either. They play more like Tyranids, if anything. Very short-ranged. The only other army that can do a long-range gunline are Tau, who ARE getting an update in the very near future.

Eldar do just fine with hoards of Infantry and tanks. Don't let the overblown hype of the internet fool you into thinking it's all jetbikes and Wraithknights.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

I think you mean 29....don't forget the HBs. BS4 with preferred enemy...oh and with tank hunter on all the dice that don't pen. And he gives the unit Preferred Enemy too, which doesn't sound great until you realize it gives the Plasmacutioner Gets Hot rerolls.

Guards got tricks. The other advice I usually give is to look into Inquisition for your infantry blobs. Zero effort power boost.

Renegades and heretics have the same vehicles but cheaper because of bs2 (which with barrage and all...)
As well as the piles of cheap bodies. Hell, you can just use your guard to represent them!

They are from forgeworld's last imperial armour book.

Check out The Siege of Vraks for Chaos. The Unending Host detachment is downright brutal. Up to 12 troops slots, can return to the table if defeated on a 2+. When they return they get to outflank. Any enemy shots shooting through troops confer a 3+ cover save to the units being shot at. Spawn are 55 pts for a unit of three and are in the elites slot. Or you can play the Purge detachment: 8 troops, 6 elites, 4 heavy. 18 spawn for 330 points. That's 54 wounds at T5. If you roll well, you can have over 100 attacks.

My Minmaxed marine battle company is like playing a bunch of power armored guardsmen. They just dogpile objectives and die in droves, and it's a top table list!

Shooty Horde? You could try Eldar, Guardian Warhosts with Dire Avengers, Dark Reapers and loads of tank squadrons and artillery batteries. You don't need to take Wraithknights and Jetbikes. Mind you the aesthetic is completely different from Guard so you'll have to get over that.

I second this.

Renegades of Vraks or Renegades and Heretics (from the Chaos book.. IA13 I believe?) are great lists to run as IG. You can use guardsmen with minimal explanation and it's much stronger as an army list whilst being (largely) the same.

Contrary to popular opinion Death Korps of Krieg rules from Forge World are actually really strong. Set up all your men and artillery behind an Aegis Defence Line and watch the heretics cry.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

ia13: renegades and heretics gives you the rules for traitor guardsmen which means some funky leadership changes, lint ball cheap plague zombies and access to some forgeworld weapons

there is also the horus heresy books which somewhere grant you the rules for solar auxilia which are sort of a hybird army pairing the saves of storm troopers with the statlines of guardsmen. this also gives you access to select marine army vehicles, and weapons including select superheavies. you also gain a superior version of the basilisk if im not mistaken

DA army: 3500pts,
admech army: 600pts
ravenguard: 565 pts

Thanks everyone for all the replies!

I think I'm gunna stick with Death Korps. Renegades sound cool but I'd rather fight for the imperium

The only problems I see with death Korps: More expensive than normal guard and their squads can't blob together. However they are practically fearless and slightly more survivable in close combat.

Death Korps have some of the most beautiful models, good choice.

Their minis are pretty amazing. Here's one I painted a couple of days ago (haven't based him yet)
