So, this is a term I see often in my circle. Yuppie. from what i understand it is a "Young Urban proffesional" AKA someone who makes alot of money.
But I see alot of people seem to dislike the idea of it and seem to deride them. Why is that. from what I see, alot of people from the left, seem to dislike them making money and living in the city, while others seem to just dislike them living in the city.
I personally find the idea of lving in the city and making a lot of money a good one. I mean, who wouldnt want to make alot of money?

Term coined in the 80s, describing a certain demographic of Young Updwardly-mobile Professional as found in cities and fast-paced business environments.

Yuppies differ from your bog-standard "business man" due to their relatively young age, their blatant arrogance, bloody-minded ambition and the fact that they care more about their work and making money, than the fact that everyone thinks they are a complete gakker.

More specifically, who makes a lot of money and is a bit pretentious about it... rather than just young and well-off in general.

I think it's that to be a yuppy, one needs to be arrogant to begin with, just being young and making money isn't enough.

However, that can't account for jealous haters, which are also a thing.

People still use Yuppie?

I thought we moved back to the more traditional term 'pillock' years ago?

Still better than those over-educated snobs (without any real goals to any of it) that criticize everything and act like they know it all while living in their parent's basement without a job. For me it's mostly the people that turn into grammar Nazis and criticize movies endlessly as well. Basically people that criticize yet offer nothing to society and only bring others down that actually do something.

Indeed. I think the preferred social group to malign is now "hipsters", assuming they're still a thing.

I think people who are driven by money are generally quite dislikeable. You can admire them if you like, but it's really hard to actually "like" someone who puts profits before people.
I personally find the idea of lving in the city and making a lot of money a good one. I mean, who wouldnt want to make alot of money?
It depends on your perspective. I think what people want is good health, a nice home, someone beautiful to love, time to spend with their friends and family, recognition for their achievements, work and interests that allow them to express themselves, security for their family, and in their old age. Since we live in a capitalist society, most of that stuff comes with money. So yeah, most people dream of being rich, but for many it's just a way to buy themselves out. A lot of people aren't comfortable playing the capitalist game, and see profiteering as greedy and selfish, and so they hate those that are comfortable doing it, and hate the society that rewards them for it.

If I had all the things that I listed, then why would I need money?

It's not just the bloody-minded quest for money - a yuppie was (is?) also making sure everyone knew he made money by flaunting his wealth as often as possible.

He can't have a cheap faux-leather wallet, it must be a designer product made of real and hopefully exotic leather. A discrete watch? Only if it's also senselessly expensive and made by a brand the other yuppies recognize. And he can't go to the corner bar for a cheap drink, that would mean he has to mingle with workers - at the very least it has to be a nightclub with dress code so only "better" people bother turning up. If he does sports it's not something cheap either, it has to be something with expensive gear which he can brag about.

edit: Yes, bragging. The yuppie won't tell you how well his watch keeps time, how nice his car is to drive or how fun skiing in Switzerland is - he'll tell you how much it costs.

People around my area would define a yuppy as: An arrogant business man (or woman) who couldn't handle a day of actual physical labor.

Yuppy is still a relatively common phrase around here. It's probably because of the sudden burst of country lovers and redneck type of people.

?

Yuppies were the antithesis of country folk. They exemplified the BMW driver type.

Huh. Interesting qualifiers.

So...if you appreciate well made things then you're a yuppie. Got it.

It depends.

If you like well made things because you like well made things, then no.

If you like well made things because they are a status symbol, and you go out of your way to make sure that everyone around you knows that you own these status symbols then yes.

Spending money on something you like = not a yuppie.
Liking something because it costs a bunch of money = potentially a yuppie.

We also use it, though "Hipster" or "Bo-Bo" (french: bourgeois-bohème) are probably the terms being used now.

In Germany, it basically describes members of a certain milieu: Well-to-do lower academics who pretend to be left (or: very conservative in an aristocratic, rather ridiculous way), young and hip, while actually being no-longer-that-young, mildly conservative and running behind/sheepishly following trends in order to re-affirmate their low self-esteem and loss of meaning of life.

They are very much associated with the process of "gentrification" of city quarters (invasion of worn-down but declared "hip" quarters leading to a general massive rise in rents, the displacement of the indigenious/traditional inhabitants and the consequent destruction of everything that made the quarter "hip" to begin with).

Also responsible for the success of Apple in the new millenium.

Basically every city dweller who is wealthier than the average but still member of an economic middle-class who emulates being rich or substituting it with emulating hipness/membership with the hip avantgarde, and or eco/bio lifestyles, while basically cloning / falling back into the conservative life-style of their parents and making inner city living space slowly unaffordable to anyone with less income than theirs.

I would think hipsters are similar but I have no proof hipsters are actually working for that money.

The term "yuppie" is still used in the Bay Area, and refers specifically to the people attracted by the start-up boom. It's practically synonymous now with tech-worker. Other popular terms include "tech-bro" or "dick".

I'm of the opinion that such vitriol is wasted. Until the bubble bursts, this demographic isn't going anywhere, and I don't see the reason why some of my long time SF resident friends insist on launching huge rants (on social media or IRL) about it. I prefer to dislike rude people rather than rude techies; a guy not giving up his seat on the bus to an old lady isn't automatically a gentrifying ass in my mind, he's just an ass who may happen to work in tech, or finance or what-have-you.

I definitely don't encounter it on a daily basis. It's used but is nowhere near as common as the various tech-related nomenclature.

Any time I have heard anyone use the word yuppie it was directed more towards someone because of their attitude rather than their income. A typical yuppie may very well be in a high income career, but typically they are arrogant, self centered, oblivious to others, have inflated self-esteem, and buy things as a status symbol to demonstrate their wealth. Their typical world view ends at their nose, and they are only concerned with what you can do for them.

Depends if they are using it ironically or not

I think it first has to drop out of common usage and be dormant for some time before it can be utilized by a hipster
