Subject: Let's say I wanted to get started in AoS... Vampire Counts on the cheap

I have some vacation time coming up, and I was thinking about using some of it to learn AoS as well as paint some figures. I wanted to start out cheap and basic. I'm thinking 20 Zombies and 10-15 Skeleton Warriors. Is there a good leader character (maybe like the (maybe the Necromancer) that might be good to lead these undead into battle?
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Legion of Death!
Luckily for you AOS is super easy to get into. A character and a box of guys and you would be good to go! As for what to start with it depends. Skeletons and Zombies only work well in large groups of 20+ and starting off with 40 guys might be a little intimidating. If you have the budget and the dedication though their is nothing stopping you from getting a horde of skeletons or zombies. I wouldnt recommend splitting it into a group of 10 zombies and 10 skeletons just because they work in hordes. If I were you I would consider getting a box of grave guard and either a vampire or a Necromancer. Both are pretty good, but a vampire can help out in combat more and they have a unique command ability. Hope this helped!

If you don't mind buying from a different company Mantic has a line of reasonable undead for a good price. For $80 you could have 40 zombies and 40 skeletons. Just buy your actual Vampires from GW proper and you'll be well on your way to showing your enemies the might of Team Edward.

Thank for your advice. I actually play at a GW shop? So they won't allow anything but GW models to be played there. But I think I'm going to stop by the shop tomorrow to see if they have some Grave Guards and a Necro in stock.
Thanks again!

These days there are no benefits to playing in GW stores and a lot to playing in independent stores or clubs if you have any around, being able to use whatever models you want and usually having a lot more room for gaming being two obvious ones.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

I do have a FLGS in town, but it's a matter of distance. I used to be an Magic: The Gatherign player (well several TCGs, but narrowed it down to MTG). I got a new job at the beginning of the year... a great job. But, it made getting to that particular game store tough traffic-wise. With the longer commute to work as well, my amount of time has gone down significantly all around. The job is worth it, though.
The FLGS that runs Warhammer is actually further away through worse traffic than the MTG/Board Game store.
My local GW shop, though is more-or-less on my way home from work. So, I can drop by on the way home and play. And, it's only a couple miles from where I live (where the FLGS is a good bit further).
I also appreciate a non-competitive atmosphere. Never been a competitive player... not even in MTG.
But, mainly it's a matter of how much time I have in the evenings now as well as traffic and distance.

I have a 10 mile drive home from work. And it's taken me an hour to make that trip a couple times. I feel your pain. If GW is the only place of reasonable time management for him to go to guys, we should work with that.
Trawl eBay for old skeleton models and sprues, and make custom bases that have gravestones, extra heads, hands reaching up out of the ground, etc. It'll make your models go further. It's similar to filler, but not quite the same since the game is skirmish based now.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I want to make sure that I like Vampire Counts and AoS first, but my favorite model from Vampire Counts is the Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon. I love the way that thing looks. I might seriously have to invest in that one soon!
Again, thank you all for your help. I've gotten them all cut out of the sprues and have assembled the Necro so far. Unfortunately, that's all I can do tonight as bed beckons...I have to be up early to be at work tomorrow.

As a newly inducted denizen of shyish, I highly recommend trawling ebay or even Craigslist as there are deals aplenty to be had. Recenty nabbed myself 800$ worth of VC for under 250$. Granted some of the models need to be stripped by hey I'm fine with that, super easy.

I would try to grab one of the von carsteins vampire characters. They are tough, hit hard, can heal, and are wizards so you can unbind your opponent's spells and buff your save rolls.
Put a mounted character along side blood knights for a ton of bloody fun! The death faction is a lot of fun to play, and resurrecting units is great!

The beginning of my AoS crew has now been assembled
I also added this to AoS crew today. Still in the box, but I've been wanting this model since I first laid eyes on it.
