This past week, Warlord unveiled the starter set for their Sci-fi game - 'Beyond the Gates of Antares' - called 'Strike Vector One - The Xilos Horizon'

For those who didn't see;

http://us11.campaign-archive2.com/?u=dcf2fce108a2b2d6ebd1d03ae&id=52c89af904&e=b4d5a12b0d

...and with a new dedicated Gates of Antares Newsletter, a flurry of articles in this past week's regular Warlord Newsletters, and a pre-order date slated for October, it looks like we're due to see plastics before the end of the year.

With Rick Priestley having written the game & backstory, the game sharing some of the core mechanics from Bolt Action (order dice, and a modified version of the Pinning rules,) and the ever-improving Warlord plastics we've seen over the past 6 months or so... I for one am really looking forward to diving into this set...

What are the thoughts of the wider Dakka circle?

To be honest, it doesn't do much for me at the moment. I feel like I have been there and done that all ready. However, I am normally a fan of Mr. Priestley's work so I might be swayed by really strong buzz that goes beyond Bolt Action in Space!

Seems like a good starter set. I hope they do well. I quite like the way bolt action plays. I'd be interested in some cross over army lists between 40k and this.

The Rulebook has now been finalised and sent-off to the printers, and the first shipment of plastics have arrived at Warlord HQ (the Concord and Ghar for the Starter Set)

The Warlord offices are buzzing with excitement!

Thanks for pointing that out Warboss, have added the BOW video to the news/rumours thread.

So this relies (mainly) upon the Bolt Action rules mechanics, as a non historical player how smooth/good are the rules for Bolt Action?

I am especially looking forward to hard plastic Algoryn troops.

It only shares a few similarities with Bolt Action: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/664369.page

"...and special thanks to Judgedoug!" - Alessio Cavatore "Now you've gone too far Doug! ... Too far... There are various articles in the wargaming press at the moment that are interesting to read.

Wargames Illustrated (both previous and current issue) has a write-up.

TabletopGaming issue 2 actually has a battle report in it which gives some idea of how the mechanics function. As Judgedoug says above, there is more to it than Bolt Action in terms of unit profiles and special abilities (perhaps caused by the fact that you don't have just 'human' analogues, the game mechanics have to take account of different biologies and forms of technology)
